what weight and type .308 for coyote

I did a search for this info but no results.
I just finished building a 16.5 in .308 and want to shoot a coyote with it. I would lake not to leave a whole the size of a basketball. So what I was thinking was go heavy and solid but not FMJ (Colorado can not use them) what do you think?
 
That's probably your best strategy. Any big game bullet around 165 or 180 grain should shoot right through them without much expansion. If you hit them right in the major bone mass, you'll have a lot of shrapnel out the back side.
Through the lungs, won't be bad at all.
 
I would try 42.0 to 42.4 gr. of IMR 4064 behind a 175 gr. Sierra MatchKing with a Fed. 210M primer in Win. brass. That load has shot very well in every 308 I have tried it in. Should zing right through a coyote with out much expansion.

I bet that rifle is loud.

I would just go with a 150-165 grn 'big game' bullet. Maybe a matchking if that meets the non FMJ requirements. Even with the 243 I like the stouter bullets. The exit is usually not to bad & you can use the same load for deer.
 
I just use the same 168gr Amax that I use for longe range target shooting with my AR10.
I know that the Amax is not truely a hunting bullet for shooting deer or anything else that I intend on eating but they do blast straight thru a yote with very little offside damage.
And I do not have to switch ammo or scopes for any of my shooting needs, if it can hit a target at 1,000yds it will kill a yote.
I have found that Hornady or Lake City brass works great with Varget and Winchester primers. Just my .02.

PaPa i do not kown if it is load I have not shot it yet. Are you saying that because of the 16.5 in barrel. I was thinking of getting a can at some point.
 
I`ve been shooting a lot of reduced loads with Trail Boss by IMR.The most recent day outing involved 223,243,270,7.62x54R,and 8mm Mauser.

The 7.62x54R and 8x57 was shot using the max load.Very very mild recoil and accurate as well.And would knock the crap out of a coyote.The 110gr VMax comes to mind for the 308Win.

The load would be quiet also compared to full power loads.Moreover...I shot 5 fast shots and the barrel was still cool/cold.Probably would not work the action of a semi auto however,but don`t know that for fact.
 
Yeah, because of the short barrel. It would be handy though, and a can would tame it for sure. Be sure and wear hearing protection when you do shoot it.

The 125 NBT in my 300 Wthby is not friendly at all. Its going about 3400 fps and it likes to make an entrance and exit when leaving the stage!!!
 
A 125 Nosler B.T. or a Speer 125 TNT At 3150 fps out of a 308 it is NOT fur friendly. If you are looking for that stay with a good heavy for caliber game bullet or a heavy for caliber Sierra MatchKing.

My cousin shot a coyote with his 308. He was using the 150 grain federal power-shok buletts, the ones in the blue box. he hit it twice, 308 in 308 out. Come to think of it the deer I shot with my 308 using the same round was also 308 in 308 out.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to buy a couple different weights and types of bullets and see what happens
 
165 sierra game king, 43.5 gr. varget,fed brass &210m primer. Like was said earlier ...long as you don't hit any big bones you're alright. Mine isn't going fast(700 LTR & a 20" barrel) at 2550 fps...this particular rifle likes them better than 168 MK...thats OK, use it on deer & elk too.
 
You know what you might try, which I've found to be an accurate bullet that's fairly cheap?
165 gr. Speer BTSP, part #2034.

This one:

.308 Speer BTSP

I've shot a lot of those and had good luck with them, and they've got a pretty decent BC.
Depends on the barrel, though.
