What would make the best coyote bullet in a 308

A good friend of mine want to hunt yotes with his old rem 700 308. He asked me what i thought would be a good bullet choice. I told him maybe the 110 v-max. I just looked it up on Hornadys web site and the bc was only 223 or something like that. I am also thinking about a 308 so this will help us both out. What is a good bullet choice for the 308(the pig) for yotes? Thanks lee

ranges will be any were from 100 to 400 yards.

I just thought there might be a bullet designed special for 308 varmint hunting, other than the 110 v-max. The 110 v-max may be just fine he is going to try some this weekend. After looking at the bullets BC i wasnt all that impressed. But you are right it is just a coyote rifle. We dont want any skipping bullets around here, is the other thing we have to consider. Lee

I will second that vote, I just finished working up a load for my .308 using these bullets and im itching to give them a "shot".

These bullets have a BC of 0.326 and im getting 3107 fps out of them and shooting under 1/2 MOA.
My load is 50.2 grains of IMR 4895

Purt near any bullet out of a tree-O-ate will put hump up a yote....If you're asking for bullets that'll allow you to put-up fur, I don't know of any.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif ....besides, out to 400yds a BC of .2, or .3, or even .4, doesn't mean diddly poop /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The lighter bullets are fine as long as they shoot good. If you plan on trying to save any hides I would keep it simple and use a 165 grn deer load & go for the pass through. I've seen fine results with the heavier bullets out of a 30-06 & as long as you don't hit major bone the bullet will be on it's way out before expansion. With a 165 grn Gameking or Hornaday interlock you are all set for deer or whatever.

Ive only had the opportunity to shoot two coyotes with them but the 125 gr nosler ballistic tips killed them pretty dead /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif by that I mean BIG holes. Not what I call fur friendly but they shoot great. Makes a real fireworks show out of smaller animals too.

Even a SP in a 110 grain bullet would be good. I would not put too much stock in the BC, JMO.

A 110 grain bullet on a small dog like the yote if placed properly is going to do the job. I have killed 2 elk past 400 yards with a 150 and a 165 grain soft point with the .308. A yote won't be a match even to 400 yards with a 110 grain Vmax if you do your part lee with shot placement.

I have 2 308s that love the Nosler/CT 125 gr. It's published
BC is .366, so it isn't bad in the wind either. As long
as we are talking over kill, this is it. Very accurate,
and very dead coyote...I hope you aren't thinking pelt!

There are some pics on the "Hide" of a coyote shot in the head with a 110gr V-Max at I believe 75 yards. The coyote in question was completely decapitated. I can't post the pics here because of our rules, but if you want to see them you can search it and see for yourself. You will want a heavier constructed bullet for coyotes out of a .308. I have tried 110gr Sierra VarmintKings and they were pretty nasty too(not as bad as what is in the pictures)so I went back to 168gr SMK"s. The 168's are bad but the 110's are way worse.

125g TNT with Rem or Win case loaded with 49-51.5g of Win 748 with a Fed 210 primer, shooting dime size groups at 3150 fps.

this load will vaporize crows, and kill coyotes very humanely.

The 110 gn vmax with a full load of Varget shoots real well in several 308s that I know of. With that said, I know of one individual that claimed shooting 168 gn sierra match kings would do very little pelt damage as they passed thru. Like Muscrat said, go for the pass thru with as little damage as possible. Since the match kings are designed for proper balance and stablization. They are not designed to expand and provide a quick humane kill. With the 308 being way too much gun for yotes, the match kings will still provide ample killing power with less pelt damage.

Happy sewing.

The 130 gr Speer HP is one of the best 30 cal Varmint bullet i have used . The 308 and IMR 4064 has been my go to load in the 30's since the early 70's. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Speer 125 Grn TNT thje 110 will get to much wind drift anything heavier will plow right through giveing you a lot of run off's believe it or not, tey tend to just plow through with out expanding. The Speer TNT is designed for rapid expansion and that wt will penitrate well and flight is pretty straight as well The 125 grn wt helps the longer range energy as well.
