Ive only taken 2 coyotes but would like to get better at this. Never shot one at night. What time do you reccomend heading out? Just before dark or an hour afyer dark?
Thanks

We hunt alot at night and start times often relate to when the best moonlight is avaiable on a winter night. I can say we have shot coyotes at all times of the night. More kills before Midnight just because we hunt that time period more than Midnight to sunrise.

Just have to get out and hunt every chance you get and see what works for you!

So, do you recommend hunting a full moon or a new moon?

Thanks,

We are hunting during the full moon with the snow cover for visibilty. In Wisconsin using a light can only be done "At the point of Kill" and that definition is very open to interpretation. The moonlight and the snow cover allows all the shooting light needed.

If you are hunting in Indiana, then I recommend going out 45 minutes prior to dusk. I usually setup around that time and stay out until 2 or 3 hours after sunset in Ohio. Also, don't be afraid to stay on a stand for 45 minutes or longer. The eastern yotes generally don't come in after 20 minutes like they do in the west.

What I've found with eastern yotes is that I do better when there is no moon than a full moon. The best nights seem to be the overcast/cloudy ones. Whenver I've got a full moon it just seems like they can see you so much easier since most shots on eastern yotes are around 100 yards or less. Just my experience.

Dude, if I had something truly constructive to tell you; I would be glad to help. But I don't have anything helpful to add.
Here in NC we can't hunt at night. With, the exception of 'coons n 'Possums. I sure wish we could night hunt.. And, back in SC where I mis-spent most of my youth it WAS pretty much the same. There have been some pretty big changes there recently.
Best of luck with your night hunting adventures!!!

I usually head out an hour after it gets dark. I don't like a bright night but I can use lights in Virginia never really noticed a difference in one moon being better than another as long as its not to bright(new moon, first or last quarter, cloudy nights ect..) . Best times I've found are the night before or of a cold front moving in or two or three days after a cold front moving in or after a good snow.

Ernest I believe NcWhitetail has it correct. The best time is at night! New Moon, Full Moon, Cloudy Moon, Any Moon can work....

I am sure you have noticed by now coyotes don't follow a rulebook so neither should we. Whatever and whenever you can call them in is the right time to be hunting them. Good Luck!!
