Whats best way to measure to lands of bore

More tools.

The Sinclair Nut is a simple and effective tool used with a dial caliper.

+1

Also a Hornady (stony point) tool is excellent.

I use a Davidson ogive gage that fits on the caliper blade(same as the above, just more expensive) along with split neck case. I split a case neck with a dremel cut off wheel, then seat a bullet long in the case, insert in the rifle, and close the bolt, extract the case carefully. You will get an exact to the .001 reading on your OAL with this method, but practice makes perfect.

The vast majority of rifles will like their seating depths to touch the lands to .005 off for best accuracy, ALTHOUGH I have two that like to jump .040.

Learning to accurately measure your OAL and monitor leade growth is fundemental in the basics of reloading for accuracy.

The ojive "Nut" is a very good tool for those on a tight budget.

Several have advocated this, and I agree. I have a few comments to add:

1. If you use this method and determine a consistent resulting OAL, realize that the OAL pertains to that one individual bullet only. Use THAT BULLET to set your seater.

2. After establishing an OAL and setting the seater die the first time, do it again. I think that bumping the same bullet a little deeper, a little deeper, a little deeper, and doing this again and again distorts the jacket ever-so-slightly, but enough to cause inaccuracies. I think you can get it pretty darned well ironed out when you run the process the second time with another bullet.

3. I recommend using a comparator of some kind for measurement. I can't say why because I have never figured it out...maybe it's just the difficulty of measuring OAL, but I have had a few unexplained errors show up and I am more confident when I use a comparator with my caliper.

4. Strictly my opinion, but I'll defend it with great vigor: measurement gadgets are shiny and fun to have, but not necessary. Beyond a good dial or digital caliper and maybe a comparator set to use with it, nothing else is really necessary other than the split-necked case depicted above.

Yes I do have the tool,It was the very first tool I ordered but I still have not got all my stuff to reload even one shell yet.The word (BEST) explains my question.
I think from this topic I have learned that I will make a dummy round and also purchase a comparator.

Thanks guys for the help
