What's in your scent arsenal?

Typically, I get ready to make a stand the same as I would if I was bowhunting. Keep my clothes in an air tight container, spray down real good with scent killer, and have the wind in my favor.

But I was wondering, I use coon piss on my boots sometimes during cold weather deer season (don't wear rubber boots). What would be the outcome if I did this while calling?

Also, there are 100 different attractant scents for deer...would something of that nature work for coyotes? Have you guys ever used a scent to draw them in?

Thanks for the input!

I always use cover scent/scent killer. Not that I think it really helps alot but its almost out of habit from deer season. Play the wind, you'll never out smart a coyote's nose.

Cover scents won't work on yotes. Play the wind and you will do just fine. If they're coming to your call a scent atractant isn't gonna make any difference.

I never use scent either. I just don't see how anything's going to work after I've walked a mile and half to my 3rd stand. Bowhunting, I'm trying to get w/in 40 yards of a deer. Coyote hunting, 100 yards upwind is fine. Big difference.

I have a bottle of coyote urine that hasn't been used in 3 years. I don't think scents do any good at all with coyotes. They did lighten my wallet when I was newer at this though.

Huntress, Why I dont use cover scents every time I do think they work. I feel the bigger problem is scent elimination which sounds like your doing all the right things.
I do plan on trying Dased dog mist one of these days.

BUT....What does work is to pay OBESSIVE attention to the wind and it's direction. Then plan your stand accordingly.

Your scent cone emits from the stand in a given direction. You just have to know which way it's going, and know that the farther the scent cone gets from you the wider it gets, like a triangle.

Once you know those things, all you have to do is kill the coyote before it hits your scent cone.

You won't fool a coyotes nose. Not in any fashion. You may confuse them for a couple of seconds, but they still smell the "human" in the area, along with any scent you use.

I dont use it. You are not going to fool a coyotes nose. Drug dealers have tried for years to fool a dogs nose. You need to use the wind and try to get the coyote before he winds you. The scent products are something to get you to spend your money. Save it for other products you need more.

I shot a coyote a few days ago with my gloves stinking of gasoline and my coveralls smelling like branded cattle, but I shot him on his way downwind. With cover scent, if he was downwind, he would have smelled cover scent and gloves stinking of gasoline and my coveralls smelling like branded cattle. cover scents are a gimmick.

The best combo that I have found is a little Pantene in your hair, Ivory body wash, Degree (ultra dry) in "Fresh" scent, and a good rinse with Scope mouth wash and into the next room I go to put on my leafy gear!!

Honestly I dont try to stay "scent free" when coyote hunting. Now deer hunting is a different story. I use the Scent Away body wash (only because my normal stuff is very stong even after I shower) and I always spray down with Scent Away before I walk into my stand and I put a little Pete Richards cedar oil on my cap and boots.

Regardless your chances of fooling a wild animals nose when they get down wind of you is very SLIM!! I dont care what kind a scent suit you have, or soap you use, or cover scent you put on....dog or deer is gonna bust you once they get down wind.

And notice that DEA does NOT use trained deer for that purpose?

I always assumed that the scent products were just garbage period. I was very surprised deer hunting this year. I used a ground blind for the first time and bought some of that earth scent just to try to take some of that lovely plastic blind smell away. My wife's buck walked by straight down wind and more or less bedded a hundred yards down wind of us.

I know that scent elimination helps for deer, but I agree it is a waste of time for coyotes. I used to carry cotton balls soaked with fox pee in film containers and would put out 3 or 4 out every stand. Man it was a pain and I always felt a bit sick when eating food in the truck after a few stands. Not to mention that all my stuff started smelling like piss.

A friend of mine is a long time Yote hunter, that uses skunk piss as a cover scent.Don't ask me how he extracts it.I accused him of using it as a deoderant,as he hunts alone allot.I might give him some of my pee,as I've noticed that, because of the combination of vitamin supplements I take, mine smells exactly like skunk piss.I know,I know.I shouldn't have told that.More information than you wanted to know.
