i'm sure "dmfd" has made his pick but for anyone who has wearily wound their way thru this discussion...take a look at the Marlin XS7...marlinrifles.com...priced just over 300$...
re: tikka -along with sako barrel & its trigger...that little porthole makes for a stiff action....result is good accuracy....?

+1 on Remington/Marlin XL/XS 7.

Sandhillshunter....good deal!...maybe you can get them to come onboard here and share their opinions...i believe thats one overlooked bolt action for the buck.

I cant believe no one has thrown Howa into the mix. The Howa varmint rifle offers a heck of a value!! It would also seem that nothing has changed around here. Thats unfortunate! This was once a pretty cool place for new guys to learn a little something. Good luck in your rifle decision. Researching the purchase is always half the fun! Lee

+1 on the Howa, or a Weatherby Vanguard, basically the same rifle. They are a "Best Buy".
Someone posted on another Forum a year or so ago about a test that was done comparing accuracy of several different factory rifles, and the Weatherby Vanguard was them most accurate. I don't know the other rifles tested as the posting didn't mention them. I never owned a Vanguard before, but ran across a new on on sale at my local gun shop, a 223, so I bought it. Did lots of load testing with it and in my mind confirmed what the previous guy said, they flat shoot. Then, I bought a Vanguard in 25-05 and it shoots too. So, I have a new high regard for Howa's and Vanguards. The only thing I did to each of these rifles was install a Rifle Basix trigger in each one....

I've had very good luck with A-bolts, and you can still find them used for very decent prices. They are very very accurate, and the adjustable trigger isn't bad. But the absolute best rifle I have ever had is my Kimber Montana. Twice the price, but definantly more than twice the rifle.

Another vote for HOWAS!!! I have a howa/hogue in 22-250 and it is a great shooter; very accurate. My dad-in-law has the vanguard version in .243 and it is too! Just saw a person who hadn't shot before shoot the .243 at 1" at a 100 last Saturday. Both rifles will do 1/2" if you do your part. The howa/hogue is a real deal IMO...and you can often find the vangard version close to the price of the Howa.

A-bolts are good too. You can't buy one new for the price of the Howa products. Savages are good as are the XS7(marlin), but have their drawbacks. If you looking for even less expensive the Stevens are rough finish wise, but still shoot pretty good accuracy wise.

I just bought a Tikka T3 Stainless in 243 and it feels very good in my hand. I havent got to take her to the range yet so I cant comment on accuracy. I have read very good reports on the Ruger American and the Savage Axis for the money.

All this talk about Tikka's Savage, etc. Ruger mod 77 was not mentioned, why is it too expensive or don't they shoot straight? Haven't looked at prices for a few years so just curious.
