Could someone explain to me the difference between a wal-mart bought gun and a gun dealer gun???

Say I buy a Rem. 700 at walmart and the exact same Rem. 700 at my local gun shop. What would be the difference here?

if you have a problem with it you can go back to the gun dealer and he/her will give you help with it. or he/her can help with mounting a scope or any other gun related problem . wal-mart will SELL you a gun. that is all . in fact here in michigan wal-mart took the gun department out of most of there stores.

No diff at all. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

The 700 stands for how much it will cost you to bed, square, crown and add a decent trigger to your new Rem to make it shoot well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif.

Except that you cannot buy a firearm at most wal marts any more. They managed to put most of the small dealers out of business now they will quit ammo will go next, then find a new rifle any place at a price you want to pay.

Down here in Texas they started taking guns out of some of the Walmart stores, but just because they don't have the 20 guns they used to display you can still ask to se "the BOOK" and order from hundreds. They realy never had that much to look at, but me and my sons allways have to go look anyway.

A former sales rep for a major gun maker once told me that guns going to Walmart and other discount stores ARE DIFFERENT. New or recently reworked tooling for parts produced the closest to spec parts. As the tooling reached its expected life, the last so many parts out of that tool were sat aside for the discount store guns. Parts still within spec's, but varying more within the allowable spec.
EX: Barrel bore size- .300 +-.005" [.295-.305]
New tooling holds 500 barrels at .299-.301 .But as the tool wears the last 500 may run .295 to .305 and anywhere in between. The last go into the "discount" guns. Then put 20 parts with wider spread spec. parts into one gun, can't work the same.
That's how it was explained to me.

I'm no barrel maker, but this guy would have to explain to me how a tool as it wears, gets bigger and grow's to .305 from the original tolerances of .301 max.
What am I missing here? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

A gun shop owner and good friend had a problem with CVA muzzle loaders seizing up. The trend of the guns coming into his shop was predominantly Wal-Mart purchases not the ones he sold. As they dismantled them they found that the Wal-Mart guns had deep machining marks and filings remaining in the action. The final finish steps were not completed. The guns from his distributors were all polished and cleaned on the inside. There were no exceptions either way. He had been told by his distributors that Wal-Mart was having special runs made by some manufacturers with some finishing steps being skipped. As a result Wally was selling guns retail at cheaper prices than he could be them from distributors.

Wal-mart does this practice routinely. A few years back they sold DVD players dirt cheap that did not have the software in them to play the DVD's. Then they wanted even more for the software fix which had to be bought from the manufacturer. Final cost was about 50% more than similar models at other stores that work.

Bottom line Wal-Mart will obtain the cheapest version of the product they can. Maybe it is the same, but you will never know until it fails. Why take the chance.

The part about the guy that told him this was a sales rep!

The difference is in the stocks and finishes if any at all. Walmart will make a very large order direct to the manufacturer, they have no middle man, and usually it will be an economy gun, matte metal work, cheap plastic stock. Using the Rem 700 as an example, I can buy one at Walmart for $300 with sights, $325 without. That of course makes no sense to me as the sights will set you back at least $25 if you tried to buy them.

That is much less than wholesale.

Probably from $50-$150 less for the average firearm is the biggest difference. Walmart ain't the place to buy a Mannlicher-Schoenauer but it has a place for common stuff. TnTnTn

Many of the regular gun dealers around here include a paper with your new gun that says warranties are with the manufacturer, don't bring them the gun if you have a problem.

With that kind of notice to their customers that doesn't make any difference from buying a gun from WalMart, the only real advantage is that they have a huge advantage in the variety of guns to choose from.

Thats bull $%@#! There is no way that Remington is going to soil their good name by selling guns that are out of spec, even to Walmart! As a gun manufacture you would have to be crazy to sell the worst of your lot to Walmart, they sell alota guns wether people like it or not. So what would be the advantage of selling unaccurate rifles at one store and giving better built rifles to the dedicated gun shop. There is a better chance that John Q. Public is gonna buy a gun at his local walmart then there is of him coming to your local gun store to buy "a better gun".
