What's the heaviest bullet that works in a 9 twist .223 Remington?

I have an AR with a 1:9 barrel and a Savage 12FV with a 1:9 barrel, both shoot the Hornady 75gr BTHP with excellent results. I normally shoot 55gr bullets through both, but I do have 75gr loads worked up for both rifles.

I've been shooting the 53 Hornady V-Max out of my 5R Remington 700 with a 1-9 twist. It's my favorite Ground Squirrel Bullet!!!! That being said, I'd love to find a higher BC bullet to "Bang-Steel" at longer ranges... I'm looking at the 69 SMK, 70 grain Berger, & the 73 grain Berger... I can see lots of experimentation in the future!!!!!

Gunsbam45 .... lots of good advice from the other members posting.

Just to add another option is to get on JBM or Berger websites and they have twist calculators. Input bullet, anticipated velocity, twist, bullet length, temp, elevation, etc and they ll give you a stable or not stable output to help give you a starting point.

As pointed out by one of the guys though, sometimes you just got to try it. Barrel twist rates aren't necessarily perfect/exact. Might say 9 twist and actually measuring it might give you a 1-8.75 rate... or, a 1-9.125 rate!!

Good luck
