Whats up with Sportsmans Warehouse

The Lewisville, TX store closed earlier this year...it was in a very prime location in my opinion. I guess they couldn't compete with the 2 BPS and one Cabelas in the area.

Their ordering system has always sucked. Since they opened here, I would go in and buy what little they had left that I needed (bullets, brass, ammo, lee bases, etc.)and proceed to check back every so often to see when they got more. It would take months to get stuff restocked.

I've always refered to them as the K-mart of the sporting goods world. A whole store full of crap and their always sold out of what I need/want.

I can't wait till the Bass pro opens up!!!!! Sportsmans will be adios. Serves em right, I really liked them when they opened.

I hope they pull through. Although, I've not been going there much in recent years.

But back when the first store opened in Midvale, UT, it was just a tiny little hole in the wall kind of place with stuff stacked literally from floor to ceiling. The owner was always there, seemed like he was open for at least a year before he hired any help. He was a fishing fool back then too, used to run into him on the water all the time at Strawberry, Starvation, the Gorge. But, back then, you could walk in there and get ALL the stuff that before SW came along here, had to be mail ordered. That was pre interweb too, mind you - mail order meant mailing off a check or money order to Herters or Cabelas and waiting a couple weeks to get your stuff.

We LOVED that place back then. Still liked it quite a bit when he moved into the second, larger location. Started liking it less when it moved to the third (ginormous) location and went from a one store operation to a chain. Then eventually turned into just another big azz store full of salesman that don't know sheeat from apple butter.

Really, I've very little reason to ever go in there anymore, and hardly ever do. Nothing particularly unique about their inventory anymore, nobody in there seems to know anything, and I can usually get exactly what I want at a better price online. So, maybe they really don't deserve to stick around? Still though, seems a shame, I do hope they survive.

Personally I hope all the sporting stores make it through this economic crunch. I think in the near future you will find many bare shelfs for two basic reasons. 1. We are buying it up. 2. Stores are trying to remain liquid and thus are selling down a lot of stock.

I hope the new majority shareholder, United Farmers of Alberta, hasn't bitten off more than they can chew. They also took over the largest outdoors outfitter in Canada earlier this year (Wholesale Sports.) Sportsman's Warehouse has some interesting stuff and sometimes amazing(at least to us up here) prices so I for one will be sorry if it fails.

Cabelas took over another major player in the Canadian market, the venerable S.I.R. Mail Order of Winnipeg this year, too and while it is a bit saddening to see an old family firm like that swallowed up, but Robinson family that started it basically said they didn't have the new blood to keep running it, so it was good to see an organisation as successful as Cabelas step in. The expanded product line is certainly a bonus for us.
