What's with the (FoxPro guts) e-caller not working in cold weather?

My hunting buddy just bought a Cabela's brand e-caller that has the FoxPro guts in it. When we took it out calling ( ~15 degrees F) and it wouldn't call. If he put it in his fridge it wouldn't work but at 50 degrees it would. My little cheapo Ecotec ran fine as did my Ectreme Dimensions caller. He was told that he needed rechargeable batteries because the brand new alkaline batteries didn't function as well in cold weather. So he gets the FoxPro rechargeable battery pack, charges them up and still no go at about 40 degrees. What gives? My callers have plain old alkaline batteries and run fine.

My FP Crossfire worked great the other morning -- at (-15 below) when I started, warming up to a balmy (-2) -- so like the others said, take it back as there's something wrong with it.
