What's Your Calling Scope?

My 22-204 wears a Sightron 1.5x6, the 6x45mm has a Leupold VX-II 1x4, and the 6mm/.25-204 has a Bushnell 4200 1.5x4.5x24mm.

One of my calling rifles (bushmaster Varminter) wears a Burris Signature Select 4-16x44 with an illuminated Ballistic Plex Reticle. I agree with the field of view answers but I have never had an issue with this scope on the low end power for field of view. Colorado is much like Wyoming and more than once I have been thankful for the higher end magnification on that coyote who hangs up way out there.

My Tikka T3 Varmint .204 is getting a Burris Extreme Tactical 6-24X50 30mm tube with the Mildot ballistic plex reticle. I will do some calling with this rifle but it will double as a Prairie Dog gun so I wanted the higher end magnification and the big target turrets. The low end on this one is a little higher than I like for a calling rifle but thats why I carry a Shotgun in my lap, for the close in work.

Anybody use a small red dot sight mounted onto their rifle scope?

Like this:

Here's my rig. I haven't killed any coyotes with the red dot yet but hope to change that soon. 6-18 Nikon scope on my heavy barrel do-it-all varmint rig, red dot for close up shots. My right eyeball sees thru the scope, my left eyeball sees the red dot. No need to tilt or adjust.

My RRA .458 SOCOM hog gun has a Bushnell Elite 4200 Firefly reticle (for night or day hunting) 2.5x10x40 on it.

My RRA .223 Coyote gun has a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 mounted on it.

Both with Larue Tactical scope mounts (the only way to fly for AR's IMO).

Leupy 2.5 X 8. Stays on the 2.5 90% of the time. Like Jack said, field of view is much more important to me than power.

A 4200 Bushnell in 4 X 16 would be hade to beat in my opinion for those uses.

I put a 4200 on a CZ527 Varmint that sees dual purpose as a calling gun and a p-dog gun. I like it a lot.

I use a lighter rifle and lower power scope for a dedicated calling rifle. Light and fast vs. heavy and stable. Your choice.

I hunt open crop fields. Due to my poor eye sight, I have gone allmost exclusively on my hunting rigs to 4.5-14/16 depending on brand. The eyesight issue may be solved Tuesday as I plan to have lasix surgery then. I may have to start turning my scopes around.

I had the lasik surgery done about 7 years ago. It was the best money I've ever spent in my life! I would have paid 3 times as much! You should start a thread about it after your surgery. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!

Bushnell 3200 in 3-9X40 for calling only guns or Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 side focus for dual purpose guns that I also use for ground squirrels or rock chucks. I have 3 Bushnell's and 4 Nikon's. I've been very happy with both.

I have a Burris Full-field II on my .308 (Rem. 788)with Ballistic Plex; 2 2.5-10 4200 with duplex reticles on my 2 .221 Fireball CZ 527 rifles. I have a Leopold 1.5-5 illum SPR reticle on my working AR (16inch)in .223. My DTech .223 wears a 6.5-24 Weaver in a LaRue mount for open country coyote and PD (I am getting a "dot" scope to mount on the scope tube for close range work).

When calling, I make sure that the variable scopes are dialed down to lowest setting as soon as I leave my vehicle, so if I jump-up a coyote while sneaking into my calling stand, I can get on very quickly. While on stand, the lowest power is also used.

Hope this helps,

Karl in Phoenix
