What's your favorite .22 Mag round?

In my state on WMAs its rimfire only so its 22 mag, 5mm or 17HMR and alot of us down here use rimfire magnums and have very good luck with them. Its all about shot placement for sure! I try for head and neck shots drops them in there tracks and shoulder shots inside 100yds. you get some runners but just like deer hunting with behind the shoulder shots you get some that run aways. I like the rim mags because most of my calling shots are 50yds. or less and I don't like tearing up the hides. A 22 mag 33gr. V-max works great drops them in there tracks no need for a 22.250 and the like. Another thing I like about the little magnums is there report is very mild that means I can shoot a bobcat and move maybe 200yds. and setup again can't do that with the bigger centerfires. ~marco

I have the Marlin 882 SS with a Bushnell 3200 on it. Believe me I have tried almost every brand 22 Mag. ammo they make and I agree...my best shooting group and killing is with the Rem. Premier Green box 33 gr. v-max with the green tip. Now I only ever killed red fox and ground hogs, never any coyotes. But it is the best fox gun in my opinion.
I also have the same Marlin in 17 HMR with bull bbl. and I wish the 22 Mag shot as good as the 17HMR. That thing shoots tight. That being said, I think the 22 Mag hits harder. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
 
Marco, Peterjc, thanks for that info. It's good to hear reports of people that use the 22 mag often enough to know what it will do. I'm glad to hear that my chosen load, the Remington 33 V-Max, is a good one.

I killed one gray fox many years ago with a Marlin 22 mag, and of all things, with a FMJ bullet. It was chasing and killing the neighbor's chickens, so I ended his "chicken-thiever" (as Ernest T. Bass would say) career. The fox stumbled around a little, and then fell over. Other than that, one groundhog at about 150 yards fell to it. That one required some hold over, but found its mark, and scored. Another groundhog was taken at about 30 yards with a Ruger Single-Six 22 mag. All other shooting with the mag has been on crows and starlings, so I don't have the experience with it like you guys do, to speak of its capabilities.

peterjc, Ive got a bunch of 22 magnum rounds and I like all of it Im talking half cases of Win 40gr. hp the same for Win Supreme 34gr. some CCI ammo RWS but I think Im going to go strickly Rem 33gr. V-max and maybe the CCI Hornady stuff to after I do a bunch of testing on the new ammo this spring your right though the Rem v-max hits alot harder down range than any of the other stuff. I shot a bobcat two weeks ago at about 60yds. hit it in the head and the bullet did not exit and the cat never moved she didnt know what hit her! Coyotes I shot last year using the V-maxs same thing DRT neck shots on the coyotes. I carry my little ruger with a 4X leupold compact rimfire scope in my pickup at all times and shooting the V-maxs makes it perfect. ~marco
 
i have had good luck with cci hollow points in my .22 mag. its a winchester model 255. I love this gun. I have shot chucks, crows, rabbits and lots and lots of red squirrels also many outhers . I am going to have to get a box of those rem 33 gr. and try it out in my mag.
 
The use of a jacketed bullet in the 22 mag really made this round popular. Prior to jacketed bullets for this round, rifles would lead up and give the cartridge a bad rep.

If you are shooting predators with the 22 mag, you had better not hit a bone when it comes to poly tip bullets. The Winchester Supreme will not reliably kill ferel cats it expands so quickly.

Choose the bullet style according to your use. Poly tips and large hp for fast expansion on small critters, and Jacketed hp for larger animals that will give deep penetration.

What ever you do, avoid copper plated lead bullets. Some of the bullets mentioned may indeed be copper plated lead bullets, a scrape with a pocket knife will tell.
 
Ive been shooting a 22 magnum for over 30years and never heard that before. The first 22 magnum bullet was a jacketed bullet in the Win 40gr. true jacketed HP later came the true FMJ one of only two true jacketed FMJs the other is the RWS 40gr. FMJ. All the maxi mag bullets by CCI are plated and most of Federals are now the old REM WRF or "22 special" and Wins WRF offering age copper washed maybe your thinking of those? ~ marco
 
Federal 50 Gr. HP's in my Marlin 25MN. Shot a few reds and quite a few coon with this round. 1 shot kills.
 
My Marlin luvs the remington Premier 33 grain (v-max) ammo. Topped off with the cheapy Simmons 4-16x40 Prairie Master it allows me to drill groundhogs in the head @140 yards...

Wistlepig Popper, that rifle looks like the perfect woodchuck rifle! And those Rem V-maxs are something I think they are the best 22 magnum out there right now. There are some 22 magnum shooters that think the RWS 22 mags are the best but Ive got some of the RWS HPs and FMJs and they won't touch the REM V-max as far as varmint rounds go.
