What/without a question, is your favorite bird to hunt?

That question is a difficult one for me to answer so I decided to post it on here to see what everyone else say's.

My favorite is by far Pheasent. Reason for this is..... there is nothing better then taking an early morning walk with the dog thru a corn field, and seeing him lock up solid on a nesting rooster (at least you hope that it's a rooster).

Then when he finally flush's you get to hear the cackle of his voice, and the drumming of his wings. In probably the most beautifully colored display of nature's finest you will ever see.

Is there any other game bird with as attractive of a color pattern as a male ringneck? I don't think so....... (oh wait, I'm forgeting the drake wood duck) Hey wait a minute, I think I've stumbled onto something..... the males are alway's more attractive then the females!

GEEZ! I did it again....... talk about getting sidetracked and off subject. Sorry about that guys.

Anyway, let us all know what your favorite bird is to hunt.

That's a tough one, they're all fun. I'd have to say dove though for a variety of reasons:

1. We get a whole month (two if you count December here) to hunt them, and I usually make it out at least 20 of the 30 days. Good hunting is close and common.
2. Can't beat hunting in T-shirt weather of September.
3. The fifteen bird limit is hard to beat with any other bird I have the chance to hunt. And there are enough of them that getting that limit nearly every day is common if your shooting is up to snuff.
4. Doves are just damn fun to shoot. The way they flit, dive, swerve, dodge your shot pattern (hehehe seems like it), and come in with the wind at 100 mph, just makes them awesome (challenging) to hunt.
5. It's economically feasible to hunt more often (cheaper shells, little gas money, and no time off work).

And finally, doves are one of the few birds my fiance will hunt with me (she doesn't shoot, just works the dog for me so I can hunt more!) and that time together is priceless.

Although I live in big time desert quail country I have to admit that my favorite bird to hunt is the Ruffed Grouse. In my mind nothing can beat the heart stopping explosion of a Ruffed Grouse as it leaps into the air from a pile of dead leaves or the in your face flush on a cold winter morning when the Grouse are roosting in the pine trees. What about checking the quality of your lead by watching the leaves fall from the thees. And thank god that it only takes the most marginal hit by one pellet to drop the grouse. Good dog, cold breath in the air, the crunch of the leaves under foot and high brass 6's, god I love it!

I would have to say that my most favorite bird to hunt is Canada Geese. The reason for my choice is simple. I just love when your sitting with your decoys in a grain field then watching the geese fly towards you it's just a rush. That's why I choose Canada Geese

Thanks

Ryan,

That is extremely difficult to answer. Your arguments for the pheasant are indeed very strong. And I have to agree with them all. I do dearly love to hunt them, but I would have to place pheasant at a VEEEEERRRRYYY close second to Ducks. Just the fact that I get to CALL Ducks puts them a little ahead of everything else for me. The others do get honorable mention even though there are some mentioned that I have never had the chance to hunt, YET.

My list would have to look something like this.

1. DUCKS
2. Pheasant

3. Dove
4. Quail
5. Turkey
6. Geese ( I've never hunted them, but I'll bet I would like it.)

I sure hope that answers you question, without going overboard. They are all worthy of breaking out the shotgun.

Hunting is not just our right, It's our HERITAGE.

If it was a good wet spring, and if there is water available it is hard to beat a good Chukar hunt. 1999 was one of those great years. We got into alot of chukars and talk about fun.Plus because you hunt the chukars out in the desert you can combine the chukar hunt with alittle coyote calling now thats fun.GOOD HUNTING

ryank,
I would have to say that my favorite birds would be Canadian Geese, Crows and Doves....in that order.

Our early goose season starts this Saturday and I'm really looking foreward to it. The daily bag limit is 5, so there's going to be lot's of fumbling for more shells.

I think Brian put it best when he said "They are all worthy of breaking out the shotgun.

Our early goose is also Sept. 1st. and I can't wait! Got my shotgun cleaned, decoy's touched up, camo ready, and my diaphram muscle's feel like they are readdy to ROCK!
