Ive decided i need a lever gun in 30-30, my question is what do you guys have? Likes and dislikes? I really like the looks of the stainless marlin but want to make sure i get a quality rifle. Thanks guys

I have 2 30-30's one, '49 336RC, and 1, '90 336CS. I would NOT buy a New Marlin with the "REP" proofmark on the barrel or with a serial number that starts with 94 and lower.

Look for a used one that has the "JM" proofmark on the barrel right where it meets the receiver.

Remington bought out Marlin in 2007 and the quality went right down the toilet. There are still New Marlins on some shelfs but uyou have to look around. You will be very happy with your Marlin once you get it, I will never give up any of my Marlins EVER. (P.S. My favorite Marlin is my Big Bore 444S in 444Marlin caliber.)

I'd stay with the older rifles, unless you decide on a Henry.
I think a lever gun is a very personal choice. Play the field son Play the field...
Something will reach out and grab you.

May not be the best, but my "favorite" is the Marlin 336 Texan.
As stated above, "the older the better".
Course that won't matter with a Texan because they quit making em long before Marlin went south.

Ditto on the older Marlins. I have a 336 in 30-30, an 1894 in 44 Mag and a 444S in 444 marlin. I love shooting all of them.

I have a 1966 model win30-30 that was given to me.Prolly hasnt seen 40 rounds thru it,Ive never shot it but I like to look at it on occasion.

+1 got one that my g-pa bought for g-ma, shoots well and has full buckhorn sights and a blonde stock....g-pa was so proud of that pre-64... turns out after i did the research on it , it was made in '72....g-pa got bullshizzed in the late 70's when he bought it...oh well i have had it for quite some time and think its a fine rifle....

I have not owned a marlin 30-30, but do/have owned other marlin levers, if I could find a straight stock 30-30 marlin that would be my pick.

I really liked my winchesters when I had them, but I think id rather have a old marlin.

I own 2 centerfire leverguns, a 1968 Marlin 336C and a 1966 Winchester 94. Both nice but I prefer the Winchester.

The Winchester has better wood but the action on the Marlin is much smoother.

I still have the Model 94 I killed my first buck with in 1962 with buckhorn sights. Shoot it once every 5 years and I still shoot about a 3 to 4 inch group at 100yds with 65 year old eyes.

Thanks for all the help guys.....looks like im gonna keep my eyes open for an older marlin.....cant wait to get ahold of a nice lever 30-30

I have an early Marlin perch belly. Mine is a 1959, 58-60 had ballard rifling great for lead bullets. My favorite is my 1949 Winchester 1894. It was my dad's rifle. I killed my first elk with it.

I had a Win 30-30 many years ago.It was OK.With all I hear of quality these days with Marlin's since Rem took over I think I would go with Henry. In fact I just saw a show on the Pursuit channel last night featuring a visit at Henry. It was pretty much an infomercial/sales pitch deal but just the same the owner seems to be a decent man who really cares about customers and keeping his guns 100% American made. That's worth something in my book.
