whats your favorite lever action 30-30

My favorite lever action 30-30 is a model 94 Winchester in 25-35. It was made in about 1917 and has been used but still is a joy to carry and shoot. much prefer the 25 caliber to the 30.

Wondering why you wish this? I dig the take-down models, myself, and they are worth more money too.....

This my Dad's 1949 Winchester with a Lyman W6 folding middle sight and a Lyman 1ADA tang sight.
It is in 32 Winchester. I shot my first elk with it when I was 16. Almost 50 years ago.

While I will stand in the Marlin camp I found this while posting on another thread and thought another old lever gun picture couldn't hurt. Crappy scan of a poorly laid out picture but this M94 .30 WCF was made in 1948. I bought it from an old gent that swore he never fired more than five shots from it. It had a factory mounted Redfield peep sight and came with a box of old Winchester 170 gr. Silvertips with five empty slots and fifteen shells still in the box. Looked like brand new when I bought it. I sighted it in with fresh loads and killed a few deer with it over the years and swapped it to my dad. Dad had terrible luck while hunting with it missing two big bucks on two consecutive years and lost faith in his abilities with the rifle. He swapped it off on something else… wish I had it back today.

If he keeps his shot to less than maybe 200 yards, the 30-30 is, and has been for yeas, a very effective deer cartridge.

If he is going to be shooting at longer ranges, there are numerous other cartridges that would work well for deer. Probably a very common one mentioned often when deer are the game is the 243 Winchester. It's just one. Lots of others in bigger bore diameters available also with practical ranges far in excess of the 30-30.

The 30-30 is a great big game cartrage. It has likely killed more critters than any other round besides the .22LR.

OK that had to be said...

Now...the 30-30 has limitations like all cals...but the guns chambered for the round tend to be quick to point easy to shoot and fast to operate. The cal itself is very capable on deer sized game inside of 200 yards and Elk sized game inside 150 yards. I like the 170 grain loading and it will do fine for most of the big game in North America, if you keep in mind what the limitations of the cal are. I don't think I would Choose it for Griz or Moose, but most everything else out to 150 yards or so

Ok guys thanks a bunch, I'm more of a bolt gun guy myself I have a .270 and a 308 that I use for big game, but my brother is dead set on a lever gun and I had heard the 30-30 is a good option do that's why I was asking to get some more educated input for my brother. It sounds like the 30-30 is just what he is looking for he has not been shooting very long and I'm sure he wouldn't be taking shots longer then 200 yards.

Why do we all wish we had never sold a gun in the past.

So far I have not sold a gun in over 5 years, and I intend to keep it that way. The gun I sold 5 years ago I got over $200 more than it was worth from a brother-in-law that I did-not-like.

Why would you send a nice gun home with a person you didn't like? j/k

You will start some stuff here with that first elk thing. Everyone knows you need a big MAG to kill an elk.

I sold one of my guns to my brother-in-law to shut my sister up, because my Dad had just died, and I got all of his guns, and my B***h sister was raising a stink why her son who did not hunt did not get one of Gpas guns. My dad had left specific instructions that when he was gone that all his guns go to my son and I since we were the ones that always hunted with him, and not a grandson who could not be pulled away from playing video games all the time.

In hind site I should have never sold one of my guns since I have had no contact with my sister since this ordeal. Life lesson learned.

Maybe you haven't heard from her since because:

1. She knows that you openly refer to her to strangers and everyone else in range of your keyboard as your B***h sister.

OR..............

2. She and your BIL understand that you knowingly got to them on the gun deal.

Whatever the reason, I'm betting that family gatherings at Thanksgiving and Christmas are memorable, huh.

I knew an old guy who was on horseback and came around a corner and met an angry grizzly. He pulled the 30-30 out of the scabbard and killed it with one shot.
