What’s your longest coyote poke

991 yards. back when I liked to shoot at coyotes long range. at that distance I realized there was too much luck involved in field conditions to chalk it all up to my own skill. with the right gun in my hand would I still take a shot like that. HECK YEAH, but its not something I go and seek out anymore. Another problem is the bullets at that range have a tendency to pencil through on coyotes. The long sleek VLD bullets that you're gonna wonna be shooting at those distances. They don't tend to dump the coyote on the spot. if you're load changes by 25 FPS thats like 5 inches of vertical at 1000 yards. That can easily be a temp variation in your load. Hitting a target like a coyote that far does take some luck, and I don't care what anyone says.
 
512 is my longest, and I don't know who was more surprised, him or me. I did not recover that coyote. At the impact, he yipped and spun around several times biting at his side, then took off over a hill.

Rifle was my Sako L461 in 222RemMag, shooting 45gr Barnes XLC's, and most likely a 3x12 Burris Signature on it.

That was back in the 90's. Since then, my longest shots have been under 350, with the vast majority of those under 200.

I like to get them in as close as possible, but hunting public lands late in the season means I have to take a longer shot on occasion.
 
Mine was 405 yrds with my 22-250 using 55g Varmageddon hand load.

Had some this season at over 4...450 ish but never shot. I'm only practicing out to 300. That being said I did poke one at 317 this year with the 22br and 62g vt's facing me drt.
 
I've shot longer but best shot I feel was a 465 yard intentional head shot. Coyote was curled during the day in the snow next to a drainage ditch. I looped around behind several small hills trying to find a way closer. But every once in awhile it would lift it's head up out of the pile formed around it. So I decided to get straight downwind to minimize drift. My first gen Bushnell 400 LRF would only read out to 240 yards(on snow), I thought a dirt clod at 230 looked half way. So I thought hold for 475 with the Nikon monarch BDC 4.5-16. Laying in the snow prone on the bipod for 15-20 minutes waiting for a wind lull/coyote head up condition. Centered between the eyes(475 yard hash mark)I hit just above the left eye. Took a couple ranges during the retrieve, came up with the 465. My buddy was in the truck a mile away watching thru a spotting scope, he said he kept saying out loud get closer. Than saw the head snap back and sink into the snow, said that will work when he called me on the cp.
