I just got word that my hunting "Sidearm", a S&W model 10 Bull Barrel is in the mail back to me from getting hard chromed...

Last year while bird hunting I had a bear show too much interest in my activities /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif, and then while FurHunter was calling on a coyote hunt, a Mountain Lion responded to see what or who was going to be breakfast? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif So I have added the "SideArm" to my list of equipment.

Do you carry one, and if so what is it?

I always carry a sidearm, usually a Colt 1911 .45 in a "tactical" camoed holtster, worn on my chest for quick access.

Ruger P90 when ever I am out and about in the field. to make it legeal in the Hoosier state it just has to be in the open, not allowed to have it concieled.

If I am hunting with a long gun, I carry a S&W 642 38 snub in my front pants pocket. If I am in the woods just bumming around I carry a Glock 21 45 ACP, or My Colt 1911 in same caliber. The Glock holds more rounds, but the Colt allows me to shoot lead bullets and I really like the comfort of 255gr Keith SWC's when in I am in bear country.
We won't name any names, but someone very close to me had to shoot a bear last year that had backed him to the edge of a 30 foot cliff. Bear was shot at less than 10 feet. Yeah, black bears are not dangerous, but this bear apparently had failed non-aggression 101.

Oh... duh... the question...

If I am worried about social interaction with nefarious two legged beasts... 1911 .45ACP

If I am worried about contact with four legged critters of the varmint kind while out and about a .357 S&W Mdl 19 (cuz I really like it...) 158gr half jacket semi wadcutters (same in the .45 except 200 or 210 grain...

If I am bird, quail, pheasent, deer hunting and I am armed with a shotgun I will carry a S&W Mdl 34 .22 LR for small game and coup de grace... Unless it os brown bear land... then I sweat bullets and carry slugs 2 3/4" Mag Copper solid sabots for the shotgun (I can reload an O/U from the stock carrier in three seconds) and if rifle hunting an appropriate rifle...

Hello,

When does a hunting sidearm out perform your primary hunting rifle?

If your elk hunting in wolf territory, does it really make sense to drop your 30 caliber rifle and defend yourself with a 45 caliber pistol?

I'm guessing most sneak attacks happen with the hunter, with his hunting rifle, minding his own buisness with a fully loaded rifle, not during a reload. Wouldn't it make sense to shoot with the primary and then move to a SHTF firearm when it hits the fan.

How many fables have you heard about or read in hunting rags: this situation have started with "I'd just taken my fourth shot at a moose and all of a sudden here comes a bear/wolf/lion from behind so I dropped my empty 338 win Mag and killed the predator at 10 feet with my 45 auto, one shot to the head/chest/neck".

Makes a great story, but this is giving some new hunters false information how to protect themselves.

BTW: My sidearm is a 9mm auto, for the occasional rogue coyote/rabbit/tree branch.

Kimber 45 loaded with 230 gr. Federal Hydra-Shoks, but after my last bear encounter, I have been carrying my Smith 44 mag for the last two or three outings. Still, the 45 is one nice gun to carry and it's my favorite. I shoot it well and am confident with it. I think confidence in any gun is important to overall success, as long as the caliber is adequate to do the job at hand.

I carry my Taurus .357 model 66, 7 shot, 4" bbl, with 158 grn HP's. I'm not too worried about the few black bears around here. I'm more likely to run into some crackhead cookin' meth in the woods here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

When your rifle is sitting on your sticks and the rattlesnake crawls out under your stool.

I think if a rattlesnake crawled out from under my stool, it would be covered with STOOL!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I carry a glock 20C with 16rds of hot loaded golden sabers more for two legged vermen then four legged ones.
This gun will dump a lot of lead in a hurry.
