When do you start deer hunting?

So, just wondering when you start trying to kill that big buck. The first day of bow season? It’s much too hot in my opinion to hunt the sept opener, here in Kansas, but I know of some guys who do it. Then again I haven’t even cleaned out all of the doe I shot last fall😀

Old Ozark Hillbillies would tell you they put the seasoning in when they cook them. For us law-abiding types, the archery season opens September 15th. Early firearms antlerless opens October 10th.

Deer hunting? Opening day of archery season for does.
If I have a buck I’m after, whenever he starts showing regularly during daylight hours and only when the wind is perfect and blowing at least 5mph+ steady. I won’t even go into the area he may be hanging out in. Always hoping he’s patterned by opening day but it normally doesn’t work that way, lol!!
This year I don’t have anything exciting so the does will definitely pay for it, lol.

Nobody in my family drew a deer tag this year, so the soonest I could potentially start is September 2026. I do get to take my youngest daughter elk hunting again in early November. Same place as last year.
Man, that is a bummer. Makes me appreciate living back here even more. We just have to wonder how many doe tags we will be able to get before they are all sold out.

Yeah, I sometimes forget how lucky we are with such liberal deer harvest numbers. 2 buck and 10 does. I’ve been told I’ve seen more deer in one sitting than some folks see all season.

...I prefer to start(archery) when the high Temps get down to the 50s with lows in the lower 40s to upper 30s.
I like to deer hunt in Temps from 10° - 40°.
Now here we have to deal with lake effect snow, so we could deal with 6" to 3' of snow in a couple days and have numerous storms from November to January(deer season)

Yes, somewhat of a bummer. But in addition to mule deer, white-tailed deer, and Coues deer, we can apply for the chance to hunt Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, desert bighorn sheep, elk, oryx, ibex, javelina, Barbary sheep, and pronghorn. Odds are usually long, but there's a lot of variety. In the immediate family this year we have three elk tags, a javelina tag, and a Barbary sheep tag, so there's some fun to be had. We can buy bear, cougar, and turkey tags over the counter, though there are limits/quotas. Predator hunting is pretty good at times, there's decent fishing despite it being a desert, and surprisingly, there are places with good waterfowl hunting. In good rain years, quail hunting can be excellent, and there's pretty much always a limit of doves waiting around a waterhole somewhere. All that said, I miss my TX deer lease where I could shoot four deer, four turkeys, a bunch of hogs, and an exotic or two every year. :)

Archery season fires up October 1st. I may go once or twice early on if things cool off, but I generally don't get serious until about the last week of October.

I had to go look at our bag limits.

Private Lands
3 Antler deer
5 Antlerless deer

I got to see my whole limit eating in front of the house earlier this evening

When f&g says I can. Draw system here and your season is weapon and region specific and is anywhere from a couple weeks to a month or so long.
