Where is a good place to hunt in AZ around the valley?

I just got finished sighting in my scope on my AR-15 a couple days ago and as I was driving back from the range I saw a coyote run across the road. I have never been coyote hunting, but I have resently been hit with coyote fever. It is probably because I am leaving the country in about a month and will be in Chile for 2 years, so it will be a while before I get an opportunity to do this again. The only problem is that with all the shooting restrictions in the forest I don't know where to go. I also don't know where to find them. Would any of you hunters out there mind telling me where a good place to go kill some coyotes is? I am in Mesa but wouldn't mind traveling about an hour or so to get something.
Thanks in advance.

Hey Clint

If you're in Mesa I've got a sweet place for you to go. The place is Florence, yeah where the prison is. If you need directions and a couple hot spots shoot me an email. I don't get down there near enough. P.S. Lots of quail too!

The thing you need to worry about when hunting around the valley, is what hunt unit you're in. Most of the valley is unit 39M which is rimfire or shotgun only. Also, you need to find out where the county boudaries are since you can't shoot in any city boundary.

East of AJ on the east side of US60 is not in unit 39M, so you can use your AR. The only thing you've got to contend w/ out there are ATV riders (after 6am on any weekend), and a lot of smart coyotes. They get hunted pretty heavily, so they're not stupid. If you're going to go, I'd say make it on a weekday if you can, and get back in as far as you can get, to the areas least likely to have been called before. ie, drive until you can't drive anymore, then walk a half mile or so. Another idea is to use a ladder and call areas that most conventional callers would skip. I've had some luck on the ladder out there.

Try west of the town of Mobil (west of the town of Maricopa). Also, if you'd like to help the antelope populations try the flats west of I-17 around Orum-Dugas exit. If you don't mind driving aways head to the ag lands on the Colorado river. The dogs are red there but there are lots of them.

If you're really interested in coyote hunting contact the Arizona Predetor Callers, www.azpredatorcallers.com. They will be main sponsor for the World Predator Calling Championship this year. That competition is held at the same location for two years and then moves to another location for two years and so on... This will be the second year for the hunt in AZ. The best predator hunters around show up for that event and even if you don't participate you can learn a lot talking to those guys.
