Where to hit Big game

I might say we like a clean kill, or in other words making sure your shot hits vitals, if not the backbone. Anyways I found this read off the Remington site. It's not the easiest link to find there so I wanted to post it. A good article and refresher. Includes images indicating vital areas.
Check it out.

Danurve,

I would say the best “kill shot” is whatever you are comfortable making with the most confidence.

Weapon selection plays a big part too. Be sure to have the right “tool” for the job at hand.

Vitals--Heart lies low in the chest cavity just behind the front leg. I like to aim slightly left of the crease halfway down the leg between the shoulder and the knee. If I don't sever the heart, I'll shatter the lungs.

Feral Hogs--These things have a shield of scar tissue which protects their vital area. A renowned hog hunter says he shoots hogs in one place and one place only0--the neck, at the point where the base of the neck joins the body. He says it drops them in their tracks and they bleed out better.

I will say that more elk and bigger game are lost each year do to the hunter striking the animal in the front shoulder, rather than going behind the shoulder into the rib, (1/3 to 1/2 way up from the animals girth)on an elk or moose. This will take out both lungs as well as the heart possibly. Neck shots are a gamble, it is easy to lose a big animal when taking such a shot.....odds of success are less on this shot.
If animal is facing you, take aim dead center of the chest area just below the join of the neck to chest on the animal. Accuracy is a must, but Penetration is always critical, so use a premium type bullet such as a Nosler Partition on big game. A cheap insurance policy hunters.

My preferred shot is just behind the shouder with the bullet angled so it takes out the off shoulder-ie punch through the heartlungs and hit off shoulder. It takes patients to wait for it but if you do it tends to drop them in there tracks!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif If you think about it you get two for one -ruin the vitals and inmobilize at the same time. It also make for an easier follow-up shot as well they usually don't run off but hobble slow. Though I've alonely had one require a second shot(wrong bullet) - broke apart before hitting off shoulder-don't used them anymore!

From the game that I have shot the lungs seem to be better than the heart. If shot in the lungs they just hump up and soon fall over. most of the game shot in the heart seem to go alot further. but they all end up dead. I have shot alot of game in the neck but they are with in 200yrds. and I make sure I have a really good rest.
