I have a pinned thread on “Where to shoot a hog” that has been pinned for several years. I came across this video that has an interactive anatomy to show where and why to to shoot a hog, which goes right alone with the current thread so I added it to the pinned thread.

Siince many have probably already read the pinned thread and my not go back to it, I am posting the video here.

 
I've hunted hogs, but never got a shot opportunity. If given the shot angle, I'd take a brain shot every time. It drops them and saves on the meat.
When it comes to hog hunting, I don't think you can use too much rifle. :sneaky:
 
That is a good video. I have killed hogs with a 12-gauge turkey load, .22LR, .223, .243, .308, .30-06, .45-70, .41 Magnum, and 10mm. Just have to know where to hit them. Most of my hogs are incidental to other game that I am hunting. So, I shoot them with whatever I have in hand at the time.
 
I've killed more hogs with a 22mag and bow than anything else. With the 22mag just shoot them in the base of the ear. Bow, wait for a good qt away shot and slide it in low behind the shoulder.
 
I laid 5 down on a corn pile at 15 yards from the bed of my truck one night with a suppressed .22 running subsonic ammo so that shows that a round in the ear canal is pretty lethal regardless of caliber. I have also killed plenty in traps with a subsonic .22 regardless of size.

That being said, when out hunting for hog control it's a numbers game and usually that means it is game on after you lay the first one down. There is no way to guarantee shot placement on a running hog so IMO the best policy is to use a weapon with good terminal velocity.

That debate opens a big can of worms but my personal favorite is the 6.8 SPC. I like it because it runs on the AR15 platform and provides good terminal velocity at normal hog hunting ranges and allows for quick shot recovery to acquire follow up targets.

There a lots of good choices and everyone has their favorite so if it fits your shooting style and has enough juice to drop the runners it's all good. If you are fine just taking singles with shot placement as your priority then that is a whole different strategy which allows for more caliber choices.
 
Shot placement rules... I've killed hogs with plenty of calibers including handguns and shot placement has always proven to be the number one influencer.

I stalked this guy and made a single DRT shot on him with a Glock 40 in 10mm...



Did the same with this smaller hog but shot it with a Glock 19 9mm...



Neither of these handguns have the terminal capabilities of a high-powered rifle but will kill very effectively when the bullet it paced in the proper location.
