Which 17 hmr

I am looking at buying a new 17 hmr for me and my kids to shoot and plan on having it threaded for a suppressor so the two I am looking at are Savage 93r17 bsev and CZ 455 Varmint. So what are the pros and cons of both.

The CZ is a fine rifle. I have the 452 American that I dearly love. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the Savage either, just that it's a cheaper rifle and doesn't cause me to get too excited over it vs. the CZ. A buddy used a heavy barreled 97R when groundhog hunting a few years ago and did pretty good with it.

If money isn't critical, then my vote goes for the CZ.

I've got the Savage 93fv and it drives takes. It is just a black synthetic stock and a heavy barrel with an accutrigger I tuned down to under 1#. But mine shoots the Hornady vmax very very well.

I own a CZ 455 Varmint in .22 Mag and love it. It's a tack driver. I've owned Savage rimfires before and have had so many issues with them that I'll never purchase another Savage again.

CZ pros: Hardwood stock, accurate, oversized bull barrel (which I like), all metal parts, just a good quality rifle.

CZ cons: Honestly none that I can think of.

Savage pros: accurate

Savage cons: plastic stock, plastic internal parts, feeding issues, not really quality in my opinion.

I would go with the CZ455. I had a savage 93 with a lam stock and heavy ss barrel, it shot 20 gr bullets better than the 17gr but it did not balance well so it went away. I found a used CZ452 varmint and can't believe how good it shoots, I really like it. I wanted a lite weight gun to carry so bought a CZ455 combo - 22lr and 17hmr - it is not quite as accurate as my 452 but it is still better than the savage was. Please don't get me wrong, I like savage's just not their rimfires.

While I agree that CZ's a better choice I'd point out that the new 455's have plastic magazines and magazine wells.

Yes, you are correct. I should have pointed that out.

My advice would be to handle both and feel the difference in quality between the two.btw i own 4 cz 452 Americans in each of the rimfire calibers (22lr,17m2,17hmr and 22mag).if you haven't checked out rimfre central you need too.their is a bunch of good information on rimfires over there.from what ive heard the savage rifles are plenty accurate but there is no comparison to the feel and quality between the two.thats just my opinion ymmv.if i needed another rimfire i wouldnt hesitate on getting the 455 although i prefer the 452 that it replaced.

I had a CZ 452 in 17 HMR and sold it, replaced it with a Savage 93-17 in a thumbhole stock, it went down the road. I really liked both of them but they were replaced by a CZ 527 in 17 Hornet, I don't intend to go back.

Here's my 455. Put a Boyd's Coyote Laminate stock on it and a Vortex Tactical scope. Here's a pic of the groups it is shooting at 50 yards.

Wasn't sold on the hmr over the 22 mag so I didn't want to spend a ton to try out the 17. Picked up a Ruger American rimfire on the cheap. Pretty impressed with the rifle and the round. Had it nailing 556 cases at 100 yds in short order. I will be keeping it.

Well I think I am going to go pick up the CZ 455 Varmint tomorrow how is the trigger anyone change it or is it good to go. Also has anyone changed the bolt handle to an oversized knob have read the knob was on the small size when running a scope.

I can only comment on the trigger. It's an adjustable trigger. I had it so low at one point that I was uncomfortable with it being that low that I adjusted it back up. You'll like your rifle. Post pics when you get it.

I have a Savage 93/17HMR SS HB Laminated thumbhole that I've done some upgrades to and it's been a great little sage rat killer for me but if I was buying a new 17 HMR tomorrow, I'd get the exact CZ 455 Varmint you are getting. I've been around a few CZ rimfires and I have a couple CZ 527's, CZ has made a believer out of me and I think they make a very quality piece.

I'm sure you'll be very happy with the purchase of your new CZ 455.

Which rings are you guys running on your CZ 455 Varmint with 4x12x40 scope. Looking at Tally,CZ, Burris signature. What hight also. Thanks

You mentioned Talley's which is what I run on my 452.
Go to their web sight and they have rings specifically for the 452/255. It's more about the ocular bell clearing the bolt knob than the size (to a point) of the objective bell.
The bolt handle's fine. No different than any other bolt action rifle. Those big tactical knobs look stupid on these petite little rifles IMO.
I have a RB trigger in mine but the YoDave kit works too. You'll probably want to at least install a lighter spring.
