which 44 mag between smith and ruger

Ive got the chance to buy one of two revolvers.I also have a long gun in the mix. The revolvers are a Smith 629 Classic or a Ruger super redhawk both 44 mags of course.Im wodering if the smith will shoot as good as the Ruger. I had a Super Redhawk that shot a ragged hole group at 50 yards with a scope and from a rest. I like the feel and looks of the smith better though. Whats youre opinion? I also have a Marlin 1895 CB in 45/70 I could get but onl one gun for now. One of the 44 mags or the 45/70. Granted I may never get to hunt with the 45/70 but always wanted one but the idea of having a nice 44 mag kind of puts the rifle on back burner.Anyone very familiar with the Smith 629 classic?
Thanks
Daryl P.

They are both fine revolvers I like the looks of the Smith over the Ruger but looks do not make it shoot any better I have owned many Smiths they always shot good but for some reason I just couldn't keep them I own right now 6 Ruger 44mags No super Redhawks again i have owned them but just can't get warmed up to them.
I do hunt with three Redhawk 44mags a 7.5" a 5.5" and 4" I like the Redhawk over the super Redhawk mostly for the looks and feel of the gun I guess.
For Hunting I prefer the Redhawk with its longer cylinder over the Smith, I prefer heavy cast bullets and with the Rugers longer cylinder you can load the 325's further out and get more powder space.
I also have one of those Marlins also a lot of fun to shoot.

depends on what you want the gun for hunting, shooting I would like a S&W M29 mountain gun for packing in the woods its lighter than my 4" Redhawk I also would take one in 45 Colt

The comment should be will the Ruger shoot as good as the S&W. I had a 629 Classic that I really liked, and a buddy offered me alot more than what I paid for it so I made the mistake of selling it. I will get another 44 mag someday, When I sold the 44 mag I found a Marlin 444S in 444Marlin and I have been in love with this gun ever since. I would highly recommend you getting a Marlin big bore (444, 45-70, 450) sometime. The 44 mag shot real nicely so I would recommend you get one of them also, if we just had lots of money all the time to keep buying guns we come accross, life would be good. Good Luck with this difficult decision you have to make.----Riflemann

I love the Ruger Redhawks and Super Redhawks. I've owned Smith & Colt 44's over the years and many Redhawks. While I like them all, nothing is as durable as the rugers when it comes to big double actions.

I did kill a big bear on Prince of Wales island with a Super Redhawk and heavy flat nosed 310 grainers. I've since gotten rid of the 44's after that and now shoot a Super Redhawk in 480 ruger.

Of those two I'd pick the Ruger...even more so if you're planning to mount a scope on it.

My all inclusive pick of the litter would be a Taurus Raging Bull...they have an incredible lock up and are as tough as they come.

id get the marlin...i have one and love it
think you could find something to hunt with it lol

if you are gonna scope it...ruger
if not you said you like the looks and feel of the smith better so then go smith

im wanting the blackhawk hunter...very cool

good luck

Of the 2, it is a tough call. I like both and have shot both many times.

That said, I prefer larger than a 44 mag for big game. 45 Colt and 480 Ruger are the way I roll.

I also like Single actions better.

My good bud has a 629 and sometimes we trade revolvers when we go out hunting. He prefers my Bisley Blackhawk 45 Colt to his 629, and so do I.....

Are you a hand loader ? The Ruger is stronger it will take much much heavier loads then the S&W . But I like the looks of the S&W more so if your don't load Big Foot loads or just shoot factory ammo I'd get the S&W .

I have a Super Redhawk 7.5" and a 629 4". As was previously mentioned if you are going to scope it or shoot heavy cast lead I would get the SRH, otherwise i would get the 629. Really you cant go wrong with either. The SRH is stronger and the 629s tend to have better triggers.
I also have a Marlin 1895 45/70 and that is one gun I plan to keep as long as possible. I have shot more deer and hogs with that rifle than any other I own. Nothing has gone far after being shot and not much meat is ruined. Really it's the only big game rifle I need, but I am not telling my wife that!

I have shot both pistols quite a bit, out of the two I prefer the super redhawk with the heavier frame especially if you decide to shoot some of the heavier bullets tames down the recoil some.

I have been shooting a 629 classic for 15+years and use it strickly for deer hunting. I have shot both rugers and yes they are alot more beefy. But their triggers are no where close to the s&w. And as far as mounting a scope it os really simple.

But if you are looking at a new 629 it should have a rail already for the scope. I would really like to find a stealth hunter. I have had really good luck with the hornady 240gr xtp's on whitetails.

I have been in and out of 629's over the years, but you'd be hard pressed to separate me from my Rugers....

But, that's just comparing the two revolvers.

Out of the 3, if it's a marlin, not marlington, 1895 Cowboy, that's what I would get. The super Redhawk and 629 are still in production, and will continue to be. The Marlin made 1895's are gone forever. Fantastic rifle, wish I wouldn't have sold mine. On the lookout for a warehouse keepsake to get another one. My wife runs a guide gun 1895, looking for another one of those too!

I have owned most of them, not the Freedom Arms yet.
Actually my favorite to shoot is the Ruger Blackhawk .44 mag.
Really nice.
Currently I use a Smith and Wesson. Nice trigger and accurate, but it really doesn't compare to the Blackhawk for comfort and accuracy if you dont need a revolvers speed of second shot.

The Super Redhawk is nice, but really heavy to carry.
The Smith is nice, especially if you are going to shoot lighter loads for target and fun.
The Ruger Blackhawk is my favorite for hunting.

Chosing between those two fine brands is like foresaking brunettes for blondes and redheads ....... or is the reverse?

I own all of the big double actions between Smith and Ruger mentioned here and won't be without any of them!

I started with a Redhawk .......... still have it. Then came the MG ....... no .... not for sale! Then on a lark added a SRH in .44 as well ......... I was going to chop that one as it was a 9.5" ...... after twelve years of enjoyment and no, never did get it "cut" ... I traded that SRH for another ..........

............... a .480 SRH in 7.5" persuasion. I let my One Ragged Hole small peep go away with that traded SRH when I found a source for new ones ......... (if you are lookin' then PM me!)

If the good Lord would only allow me two, then it would have to be the SRH in .480 and that .44 Smith MG!!

I would SO DEARLY MISS MY REDHAWK though ....... (tears)!
