Which caliber to get?

CDNN has these Howa 1500 Custom Varmints on sale in 20" or 24" barrels for $399 and I just can't pass it up.

With that, my caliber choices are as follows:

[*].223 [*].22-250 [*].243 [*].308 [*].204 Ruger[/list]

Now, I have a .223 Howa and Rem 700, a Savage .22-250, and Win70 .243 and a Savage .204 Ruger.

The largest caliber in my safe other than a .8MM Mauser is a Cooper in .25-06

I'm thinking I'm probably due for a .30 cal and this would be a great choice as I know the Howa's accuracy. I don't currently hunt anything larger than a coyote but should I want to hunt deer or even elk, I should be covered with a .308 right?

What are your thoughts....

a .308, IMHO is not ideal for elk but with proper shot placement and a good bullet it will definatly get it done, i shot oen with a .308 win with no problems as well as a few deer. I also agree that the Howa is a great gun for a great price.

good luck, always fun to have that kind of a dilema

I dont think that there is much a question there... 308. You already have the others! It'll get the job done on an elk for sure.

I would go with the 308 as well as was mentioned its the cal you dont have, I have got great accuracy from my 700 with 125gr Noslers and 168gr Sierras.

get the 308, a great gun for a excellent price, plus since you have no .30 cal's you can't pass it up, plus coyotes with a .308 would be a blast (no pun intended!)

A 308 is a 30-06 lite (and not very lite!), it will take an elk very well with 165 gr or 180 gr bullets out to any reasonable range, as will the 06. Effective range will be also very close to an 06. The two are very similar. Owning both, I believe the 30-06 handles bullets from 200 gr up better, but otherwise, it's basically a toss-up, with the recoil edge going to the 308.
