Which call would you use ?

I would like to pose the following question.
You are headed out the door to go on a hunt and you had a choice to make of which call to take, and you can only take two, which ones would it be ???
Rule #1, no electronic calls allowed.
Rule #2, I'll cheat and take a backup, so you have three.

My picks would be #1 The "Wounded Weasel", without a doubt, the most effective call that I have ever used.
#2 One of the calls made by Brad Gainey, the tone boards are superb, he is the professor of the custom toneboard.
#3 one of the calls from Carver, he did a spalted maple call for me that is superb.
What would you guys use??

This is easy for me.

My picks would be...

1) my antler open reed from catwhacker, fit with a carver toneboard.. I think it is a ruthless rabbit toneboard.amazing call period!

sounds greaaaat.

2) cyanide extreme!.. amazing pure distress. loud. and sounds unique..

and If you would let me throw a howler in it would be my wood howler from Summithowler. Great depth of volume, and it is convenient to carry.

I only take all 4 calls that Brad Gainey made me. The absolute best in my collection. Crisp, clear and LOUD! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Oh, and very beautiful! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Grizz here...
I have to be honest, I truly love all the custom calls that I have bought here on the PM site. I've yet to try any in the field, seasons over for me until next August and then you can bet your arse I will wring a few of these calls out! For right now my choice would be one of my vintage walnut Weems Wild Calls. These calls have been a standard for me, and old habits die hard.

I love this question!

Only problem is there really can't be just one answer.

What I would take would be dependant on what I was calling, where I was calling, the weather and quite frankly... what mood I was in! The calls mentioned so far are excellent choices but to try and put one above the other is something I don't believe any of us can do! Just give this your best shot!

Keep'em coming guys... I don't see any Bearmanric yet, only one Tebbe, how about some KeeKee's or The Hunted One's. Some of you may not even know who these last two are! Believe it or not there is a whole world of callmakers outside of PM... I know it's hard to believe but it's true! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Nikonut did you just dance all around this question? Your not running for governor of Illinois are you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

#1 Carver swift call. If you don't have one you should get one. Great sounding call.
# 2 Closed reed I built out of antler. It looks like a T with two bores of different sizes. Goofie looking thing but I can get some great sounds out of it.

Cheater_ One of the first calls I got from Badtothebone.

Nikonut, Just pulling your leg a little /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I take 4 lanyards full when I go to Kansas.

Hey Jim!

You know at least one of your calls go with me on my lanyard! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gifLOL I have several hundred calls in my collection... each one is special in it's own way. Each has it's own sound and feel so how in the world would I choose just three calls to take! I just wouldn't go!!!!

As for the Governor thing, NO,NO,NO!!!!... I worked for the local newspaper for many years as a freelance photographer and had the opportunity to meet several of Illinois's Governors, Senators, Representatives and even the President face to face.
Met a young Senator from Illinois a few years ago at a Gov event. When I told my Dad(now gone)he told me that guy will probably be President someday. I told Dad, "Oh, He.. NO!" and he said, "It won't be a good thing believe me, but it will likely happen!" I sure miss my Dad! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

There are so many great calls out there and here on P/M there is no way I could pick just a few /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I am assuming that I'm probably going to be the only true homer in this thread but only two...I'm taking two of my own. The first is a FrankenTweety made from a very unique steer horn that is my go-to. I hunt mainly grey fox and bobcats and the Verminator toneboard inside the horn is a deadly combo.
The second call is a call that I was playing around with and hit a sweet-spot with it and it is the second loudest, raspiest, most versatile call I have ever made. Once I voiced it I completely stopped working on it (that's why it looks so raw). I personally love the sound of this, distress / female / pup howler. This is the call that I'm using to try and cast my own tone boards with. The sound is spot on perfect.

On a side note, if Cooper17 had asked for three, my third choice would have been a Haydel's Gov't Jackrabbit with coaxer. They are indestructible and have a sound all their own. My fourth would be a tube of non-scented Carmex for my lip squeaker /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. I wish I could have put a closed reeder in the top two because of reliability but the the two you see are the two that go out with me every time I hunt anything. No lanyard, shirt pocket and killer sound.

Death Card Calls

Now that I've made a few calls I'll probably carry my own more often. That said, in the past I carried the ABC calls on nearly every outing.
A= ArkyYoter
B= Bearmanric
C= Carver Calls

I'd feel confident carrying calls from any of the call makers that are currently on PM. I do have a special place in my heart for the Wounded Weasel calls. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Nikonut,
If you, 220 swift, and I go to the Globe hunt together next year we're going to need a bigger truck. I took 4 rifles, 1 hand gun, and no less than 24 calls out west to hunt for 4 days /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif I miss my Dad too. Smart man he was.

Nope, not a homer at all. I've always said that if a call builder doesn't think his calls sound and peform the best...then why is he even in the call building business?

You can bet your bottom dollar that the only 2 calls I'd take would both have TT on the side of them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif One would be orange in color, the other...a horn tip. That's all I used for 2 months of solid calling this season.

Tony

Though I know there is a great bunch of callers on here I carry my own. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I carry the "sticky finger" call I made and a howler I made from micarta...it's a pair of my wife's blue jeans I rolled up in fiber glass resin. I think she gets a little tickle when I use it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Until yesterday my first pick would have to be a Circe “Arizona Varmint Callers Association” call my dad gave me in 1974.It was my first call and I have been carrying it in my shirt pocket for the past 34 years. The second call would haven been a Cocobolo (enclosed reed) call I made about a year ago. Then yesterday a call showed up in the mail. I went straight out to my shop and started tuning it up. This call is a collaboration call I have been working on with Thomas at Death Card Calls. I made the mouth piece and mailed it to him. A few phone calls later and some outstanding antler work later this bad boy was in my hand. It sounds so good I can’t wait to use it.Just to make it clear even though I am a call maker the Circe will always be in my shirt pocket.

Many thanks Thomas you hit this one out of the park

Tom
Very Happy Call Maker

Thats one sharp looking call Tom /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
my 1st choice would be my new Blackjack open reed
2nd would be any of the Carver calls that I have and
3rd would be the little dookerstriker call that I got from Tony
hope I spelled the right /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Tom, I'm stoked that you like the call and that it sounds the way you like it. I enjoyed working with that killer mouthpiece, it was a work of art. I'm glad I didn't scrog it up too bad /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
Oh, and +1 on the Circe, an oldie but a goodie!!

1/ small cowtip from TT
2/frankentweetie trashcan
3/the special (i think it looks simular to a weems) from tony jones in highpitch cotton tail.

1/it from Arky closed reed with a opening in the barrel.
2/closed reed from Mike Pruitt with a special reed.
3/P-bomp from North Bay Calls

This is to easy, I normally only carry 3 calls.! I like to keep it light but versatile.. Hands down, my top 3 picks would be #1 -Dan Thompson River Bottom coaxer #2 -a simple double reed diaphram for howling/distress & #3- a custom cottontail/whiner..
