Looking to buy something by the pallet. I'm feeding a 26% protein and a 14% crude fat and it doesn't seem to keep the weight on my dogs in the winter. I have to add scrapts from by butcher(beef&pork fat) Wanted to know what you guys feed and about how much it costs......

I use diamond but my dogs aren't hunting dogs. From everything I have read it is one of the better dog foods you can get and a good price too. A lot of coops sell it.

I feed River Run (nutrena/ cargil) 27% protein ,12% fat.
Dogs do well on it, but I add meat scraps when they are working hard.
Pretty common for all of the working dogs to get some kind of "scraps" when they are being worked hard.

the last few years i have fed diamond lamb and rice and diamond high energy, last year i fed diamond extreme athlete and loved it but it was a little spendy. this year i went to black gold and havent really liked it much, its not keeping the dogs up even feeding extra.... i am going to switch them back to diamond extreme athlete as soon as the black gold is gone and stay with it. i hunt a lot and it takes its toll on the dogs for sure...but with one food keeping weight on the dogs and one not...im going to feed the food that keeps the dogs up no matter what it costs!

I would go to your local butcher and pick up beef scraps. Include a chunk with their food. I have fed raw and boiled. I wouldn't feed to much raw as the possibility of getting worms. It is free and good for the dogs. If you trap, beaver is very good also. Horse meat is an excellent source of protein and if you can get your hands on tripe...that's really good. it is high in calories, protein and some vitamins as well. I hope this helps. If you can get a cheap chest freezer...load up a caner and parbroil some scraps. They will love you for it. It will give them the added energy they need. Good luck

Sorry I didn't read your whole post.....be very careful when feeding pork...raw. They can get worms from pork very very easily...which will also keep the weight off to...stick with beef or horse..like I said tripe is extremely good. If you do use pork...boil it first to kill the worms, larva and eggs.

Never messed with the "pride" stuff. Only thing I'd be scared of is it being lower quality and burning out thier kindeys..... Not saying its not good feed....just learned a long time ago to get what you pay for. I'll research it though,

My grandpa has had hounds since 1941 been feeding it along time, I know not since then but for as long as I can remeber. He is the president of the Ohio State FoxHunters Association. Some of you might know him he has been around the country with dogs. I used to feed Diamond High Energy but my grandpa told me I was just wasting my money when I just run my hounds once or twice a week he said they dont need all that protein. So I ask him what I should switch to and he told me Pride 21/10 so I did and I cant tell a lick od difference in their performance or weight. And I have been feeding it for 7 years now with no problems.

And your right on the protein, they don't need all that, it's the crude fat I'm looking for and cant seem to find a high crude fat with out a high protein. But our winters here are pretty harsh too. Like last week, -14 and lower too. So around here the working dogs need the extra fat in the winter to hold the weight.

I think it is the high protein that burns up their kidneys not the lower stuff. But that is if you are not using them hard. The lower quality stuff just goes thru them and they dont get anything out of it. But I feed the cheapest stuff I can find and then suplement it with raw meat from the butcher.

it depends on what is the main protein source. most dog foods are high in corn which is realativly low in protein at 8%.most company are using corn by products because of there cost. to get the protein up the they use some non nitrogen sources of protein. such as urea. which is a natural protein source the problem being is that it is not long lasting in the body so u get a sudden rush of protein. and then a steep drop off. u are really not getting alot out of that protein. also that is why u see alot more stool when feeding such feeds. i feed a lower protein and supplement fat to keep up energy there are alot of fat supplements out there. i feed red cell in winter or a generic form of it. it was developed for horses put can be feed to any species. i feed armada it is made in michigan but dr it up my self. my friends that run alot of beagles in field trials use buddy boy but it is very expensive. i have worked in the feed business cattle horse and pet food. diamond was always one of my best sellers. and i still use there puppy food. which if u can afford it mix some of it with the dog food ur feeding and that will raise protein and fat. without raising ur non nitrogen protein sources.

Well I'm not so worried about the quality for the feed I'm feeding now. Also good to know others supplement with scrapts from the meet shops too. My maggots(good dogs, that is) seems to do well with our system and REALLY obey after a quik training session before the scraps are give'en out.

They also make a canine red cell. Didn't know if you knew that or not. I run the canine red cell on my dogs that are working hard and it seems to put a skip back in their step.

Try going with a lower protein and higher fat content, it'll pack on the pounds I use Pride 24 protein/20 fat, get it for $16.50 a bag cause I buy 10 at a time, its $17.50 regularly , I really like it and my dogs love it. I've dropped down to a lower grade in the summer before and they won't eat it lol
