which handheld gps?

Thinking about buying a gps for hunting and would like some thoughts on the subject. Don't want to spend a fortune, so I definitely want to keep it under $300, as the added maps will be pricey enough. So far I am considering a Garmin Etrex 20 and a Garmin GPSMAPS 62st, but will research any recommendations given to me.

Cant go wrong with a Garmin...The Etrex is a basic model. With Garmin the more you spend the more you get. It is amazing how far they have come. I would say get the best one you can afford. The etrex is ok but you will find that the more expensive models will give you more for your buck.

For me (I have had two different ones) Screen size is the most important thing. Look at them in in the store and go with the biggest screen size you can afford.
Just my .02 cents
Good luck on your purchase.

I have/had (may have lost it during elk season - haven't seen it since) the Garmin Oregon and really like it. I'd be happy with the Oregon or Montana version.

Garmin 64 ST. I prefer it over the Oregon and Montana due to having buttons versus touch screen. I don't want to remove gloves to use my GPS.

The thing I like about my Oregon is that you take a picture with it an it is very easy to get back to the spot where the picture was taken. Also with chip I always know who's property I am on .

Wish I could afford to spend more, but I simply can't... so the Oregon and Montana are out. I guess now I am leaning toward the 64s because the only real upgrade to the 64st is the 100k topo map and twice as much storage. I will be adding maps anyway, and the 100k topo isn't all that much. Would I be missing out by only having 4GB instead of 8GB? I am not into geocaching so I don't see me storing that many waypoints. Tell me if I am wrong and I will spend the extra cash on the 64st.

This really is a individual decision. All the gps units mentioned are quality units. I think the difference in cost between 64s and 64st isn't much. I do use state chips with 24k topo for hunting, but I often go on family vacations where we like to camp or do day hikes. I like the idea of having 100 topo wherever I go.

As for internal space, I don't think way points use much. The question is, would you ever want to download a map and store it locally instead of a chip? I chose to do that with my home state and just downloaded the onxmap. Now if I go out of state, I buy the chip. You may also want to buy a street navigation map for the entire U.S.A.and store that locally. For me, the 64st made sense.

I hope this helps some. I think you'll be happy either way.

Brian. if that's the only difference in the two maybe just get the s model. If you want additional map storage you can download them on a mini sd card slip it in the gps and off you go.

Thanks for all the advice guys! kmeyer, I think you talked me into it. I will spend a little extra and get the 64st.

I hope your happy with it and expect you will be. Let me know if you have any questions after you get it. Although I think it's pretty user friendly.

I have the 60csx and my buddie has the new 64st. The detailed maps on the 64 are very nice but the battery life of the 64st is abysmal. The batteries on the 60CSx last at least 2 to 3 times as long as those on the 64st. Pack extra batteries and turn off bluetooth if your not using it.

That's interesting. I do have Bluetooth disabled already, but have not had any battery life issues on my 64st. I haven't been keeping track though of how many hours of use I'm getting on a charge.
