Which hound makes the best house pet?

So, which hound makes the best family and why? Have you had good luck with hounds that are both good hunters and companions or are the good hunters to high strung for the house. We have an awesome mixed house hound, but I haven't hunted him at all because I got him right in the middle of a move across the country. We're not sure exactly what he is but he weighs about 80lbs. I'm looking to get a hunting hound soon, but would like him to be a good family/house dog too!

To keep from getting to far off track I decided not to post my first thought. Can you explain the theory behind this better?

I'll stick my neck out . If that's his feelongs on dogs I'd hate to think what his feelings towards his wife and kids is.

My horses and and dog are used daily for work . They are tools and I need them . But I do love them , as each has their own personallity and ability . Were I have to draw the line is if one injured or sick so they will not be able to come back to work I have to get rid of them . I cann't justify or afford to keep all of them. If one of my animals works till they are due for retirement they get to stay . They earned it .

There are very few people that make their living running hounds , so you have dogs for a hobby . You spend to much money to keep them all year not to enjoy them all year.

Black Mouth Cur for me.
Budro can go from hunting and kill'n game to lounging on the couch with out missing a beat!
You know I dont remember ever house breaking him, took care of that on his own.
Its all about repetitiveness and routine.

Back when I was running hounds I had upwards of 15-20 hounds in the yard and 3-6 Beagles as well, Obviously to many for them all to be house pets. One of the Walkers was one of the best bear dogs I ever owned and the beagle was my bunny buster. Both started out as hunting dogs and earned the right to become house pets and unless there was someone riding shotgun never did see the dog box in the back of the truck again even when not hunting they rode in the front seat when makeing trips to town etc.
Zip the Walker was a typical mild mannered hound and would jump in the truck with anyone if found on the road, But if at home in the yard or in the truck he was very protective of what was his, Yet when my own kids or neices/nephews where young he never once tried to bite even though they pushed pulled poked tried riding him like a horse etc. Zip lived out his life as house dog once I got out of hounds being the best house pet bear/guard hound I ever owned.
Kinda want to thank you for bringing this topic up and reminding me of some fond memories of a well missed hound.

Ooooops you said which one makes the best, Well besides the two that where mentioned had there been room in the house for more.
I also had a few others that I wouldnt have minded being in the house.
Bluetick/Trigg
Plott
Redbone
IMHO anyone of the hound breeds make for a excellent house dog and if I ever get a dog again it will be a hound. Errr maybe a Feist or a terrier but definately non of them fufu lap dogs.

Guess I never thought of a hound as being high strung I think it is perhaps one of the most laid back dogs of any breed.

tanner, your like 16- 17 years old. where do you get these beliefs from ? when i see posts like that i have to wonder how well those hounds are taken care of. i`m not tyring to ruffle your feather, just curious.

I don't care if I ruffle feathers or not but some people just dont deserve to have the greatest dog ever bred, that is a hound any hound and this is why I think more of my dogs than I think of most people .. A hound is bred to hunt and make its owner happy some do it better than others , most hounds will kill themselves trying to get this done . I owe it to my dogs to show them the same amount of love that they show me !

I don't agree, but there's kind of a grain of truth there.

Working dogs are generally smarter than those foo-foo dogs, and it's been my experience that if you don't regularly let them use their talents (and brains) they get bored and start misbehaving. Kind of like kids.

Trying to turn a heeler or a ridgeback (my experience) into exclusively a house/yard pet doesn't work well. Give them regular work (hunting or herding) and they can be great family pets as well.

i have had hounds since i was 4...and im 18 by the way. I have a bumch of hounds...5 in all. they all have a insilated box, 15foot chain, heated water bowls and feeding twice a day. its not like when i go out there i dont pet them or anything they just dont get loving as in kisses ect ect....they are hunting hounds to kill the quary not pets to be kissed and hugged everyday.

To each his own, I always say. IMHO I think most hounds
make fair family dogs if you get em out plenty.
personaly I like walkers.

Thanks for all the advise guys. I just got an offer to get a 9 month blue lacy that someone can't take care of, you guys have any experience with them. It's still gonna cost me to have her shipped, but she could be a great trappin buddy.

This I agree with totally. I've never kept big hounds but have always had beagles that got there instincts excersised regularly. It makes little sense to me to buy a purpose bred dog and not utilize it for the purpose it was bred for. This is what makes so many hunting dogs good pets because they are content and not looking for ways to amuse themselves.
