Which lever action

No offense taken at all. We are saying the same thing just in different ways.
My posts can be short and to the point so I was trying to explain my thought process.

When I say .308, I was referring to .308 Win and am staying clear of .308ME because of the reasons you stated.

I have a 6.8 which is a great round for what is needed around here but since ammo is not kept locally, the 30-30 ( backup and every day carry) would be a better choice because of ammo.

Rocky,

The information you posted about 18.5" barrel length is great info and something to think about.

My only problem is finding one used that is for sale:)

Mark2,

Not trying to take over your thread, but have been thinking about a lever action myself.

The way that Remington is dropping Marlin calibers lately,(they dropped the 444 and 450 Marlin for 2012) I would be hesitant to buy either the 308ME or the 338ME. I was really interested in the 338ME but I heard through the rumor mill that Remington might drop this gun also. I like to wait a few years to see the avalable reloading componants that I can get ahold of. Good Luck on your choice and this has been a interesting topic to fallow.----Riflemann

Marlin should have just adopted the 307 win and this would be less of an issue. The cartridges have identical ballistics and are both based on a rimmed version of the 308 win.

There was a survey done a few years ago,I want to say Field and Stream, and there have have been more deer taken than any other cartridge. I admit to been a speed freak, lookin for that one hole group, terror on all game, but I still have that Win Tuff laminate 94 .30/30 settin in the Gun cabinet. Killed quite a few deer and ground hogs when I was younger with it and it will stay there.

Price of ammo is not a concern.

I have owned dozens of lever guns of all makes/calibers. I still own a lot of them, not even sure how many.

I like Winchesters best if no scope is in the plans.

For scoped leverguns I like Marlins, Savage 99s, and Winny 88s best.

30-30s have probably taken more deer than any other rifles, I'd say. That said, I have 3-4 of them in the safe, and tend to hunt with the larger calibers more often.......
