Which one? .17 HMR or .17 WSM?

I'm seriously thinking of buying a .17 rifle. For you guys that shoot one, would you recommend the HMR or go ahead and get the WSM? And how is the availability of the ammo for either?

I've been watching as one of my friends has been working with a BMAG and am very unimpressed. His is on the way back to Savage right now. It won't shoot under a 3" group at 100 yds.
 
+2. I still can't believe there hasn't been more rifles. A couple cheap pieces and a couple rolls royce…..Seriously?
 
+3 for the HMR.

I was going to trade mine for the WSM, but with the lack of ammo, and a lack of different rifles, I decided to stick with the HMR. I can buy ammo for it any time too, and with 17 gr Hornady mine shoots sub MOA at 100 yards. Great little rifle in my opinion.
 
If you have any sub-caliber CF's, go with the HMR. Otherwise the WSM might be a good bridge. Can't believe Savage has stepped on themselves this badly with the Bmag. It may kill the cartridge.
 
Now, next question up for opinions: Savage 93R17 or Ruger American? I'd prefer a composite stock and possibly stainless barrel, as I'm not the best in the world as far as cleaning and polishing my guns. Either are in my price range of what I'd like to spend, at least initially on a .17.
 
I'd try the new Ruger and not worry about it not being stainless.

Just not a fan of the savages in the rimfire models including that POS BMag..... Burp... Gag...Excuse me....

I would also extend that to include the model 25.
 
I have a Savage 93-17 BRJ. It shoots well, cycles well, trigger sucked and was replaced. If I were to do it again , I'd go with a heavy barrel Ruger or CZ of some flavor.
 
If you are already a reloader, skip them both and get the 17 Hornet in the CZ527. It is a beautiful rifle with a little more versatility than the HMR or WSM. Ammo is also plentiful out here and I have a lot of brass to use.

I just picked up the American and so far it seems to be a quality feeling rifle, I am planning on getting it sighted in this weekend or early next week and will post up a range report...

Hahaha no kidding..

I refuse to buy an HMR as I'm just not that impressed with them. I guess I've watched too many animals crawl off after being shot with one. As for the other..... One word... B-MAG! I'll take the rope!
 
The only reason I would ever buy another HMR is because 22 ammo is so hard to get at a decent price. The B-Mag doesn't get enough good reviews for me to even consider.

I have shot a lot of cottontails/jacks with mine (17gr v-max) and have not seen one crawl off. As far as the bmag goes, I am not impressed. The new stainless model is a step in right direction but still misses the mark. With a 17HMR and 17 Hornet, I really can't justify it anyways.

I think the crawl-offs are from folks stretching the limits of the HMR. It's a great round, for what it is...IMO
