Which one? .17 HMR or .17 WSM?

I just bought the B mag. I am not fond of how the barrel sits in the forend, the magazine and the way the bolt locks in. That being said I found ammo and it puts them inside a quarter at 125 yards. I bought it for a shotgun/rimfire only unit. I'll be using it tmw. More to follow.

I wanted to pick up a 17 WSM for sage rats this year, but I will wait until another manufacturer steps up. I handled the Bmag at Ranch & Home and was totally prepared to buy it, but it felt like it was made by Mattel and the accuracy reports have been less than stellar.
 
I have to agree with Pahntr. For squirrel, (and in my case those stray cats!!) it's an awesome little round. Anything bigger than that, I wouldn't use the 17 HMR. I'd step up to a 204 or 223. Or a 17 Rem if you have one, but that's not in the original two choices.

And if you use it for squirrel or rabbits with the intention to eat them, make sure you head shoot. Otherwise, it is very rough in them and won't leave much for the stew pot.
 
I sent my 17wsm back to savage because of accuracy issues and misfiring. Just got it back today. Said they replaced it with a "new" updated stock that they just came out with, new magazine hardware and new bolt hardware. Lady told me this should correct the problems. I will shoot it this weekend and let you know how it performs.

The customer should not be the quality checkers. This is unacceptable. Savage should recall ALL of them...stop shipping new rifles and FIX the issues.
 
I guess I should have said in the beginning, I have a .223 that I use on coyotes. Not saying I'll never try one with the .17 if and when I get one, but that's not the main intention for getting it. Personally, I don't think it's big enough for yotes. Or, at least I think there are better choices.
 
I finally got to sight my Savage .17 WSM last week.....at 60/70 yards it did fairly good and I had good groups inside the 1-2 inch mark.I still want to go to a nice Official Shooting Range and use my Caldwell Leadsled and see how tight of groups I can get at 50 then 100 Yards!Oh yeah....I'm shooting the 25 grain Winchester Bullets and a cheaper BSA 4x12x40mm scope.

As mentioned the Savage B-mag could have been made a lot better and with more Quality in mind for Us Consumers.Mine is pretty light and cheaply made but apparently better than the 1st Production Run Rifles that have given any Future Owners second thoughts on buying one!

I have a 17 HMR and have been totally satisfied with it. I have a heavy Savage and put a 3x9 scope on it. A 17 is a great little round, but I think too many people try to make it something that it is not. If you are going to shoot a coyote with it, you had better shoot him in the head or square in the lungs, or you might see him go over the hill. It is very accurate and so is good for head shots on small game and although I have not had the chance to try it, it should work real well on foxes and bobcats.

I set a dog-proof coon trap about 130 yards from my house. If there is a raccoon in the trap, I can kill him from my deck with the 17 without a hitch. I think the small bullet actually works better at that range than up close, as the little bullet does not fragment as violently at the lower velocity.

I think the new round may be a super rimfire if they can ever get the bugs out and start putting good rifles on the market. I would buy one in a heartbeat if this happens and ammo starts showing up. I am just afraid that it will go the same route as the 5mm Remington did if they don't start getting it together.
 
I have the B-mag, owned 3 5mms, and was a 22 magnum fan, I like the 17HMR best! 17gr. V-max at 2,600pfs. does all I need! I just have more fun with my Ruger 77/17HMR than all the others and thats what it all boils down to.
 
I would take my Anschutz 1717D over the 17WSM any day, with that being said, Like the other post before 17HMR because of the gun selection for the 17WSM is limited.
 
Have a friend that tried everything he knew how to do to make the new .17 wsm shoot accurately and he was totally unsuccessful. The HMR shoots like a dream. I shoot beer bottle caps with mine at 100 yards, no problem.

I shoot the 17 hmr in a heavy barreled CZ. One of the most accurate rifles that I own. I did add a trigger kit to it to take some of the creep out and lighten it. If I did it all over again, I still would have bought the CZ but not in the heavy barrel. I just don't need that extra weight.

Devastation on squirrels and rabbits. Always wished that I could shoot crows with one but in my state no rifles allowed for crows. I've shot coon with it and wouldn't hesitate to use on a fox within a reasonable range. For yotes, want something bigger.
