Which Savage Rifle in .223 Rem and Which Leupold Scope?

Looking for recommendations as to which Savage rifle I should buy in .223 Rem. for hunting predators from groundhogs up to yotes. I don't like real heavy barrels. Also, I probably won't get the rifle until the winter so if there is a new one coming out I can wait.

Also, which Leupold scope. Most shots would be within 200 yards...longest I would ever expect would be 300 but that would be rare. Would also consider Bushnell scopes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Savage Predator 3 X 12 Nikon Monarch scope mounted in Burris Signature rings so you don't mark up that scope. Not using Signature rings on a new mount is probably the dumbest thing you can do.

Just got off Savage website, they got a new predator coming out this year with a winter camo job, looks really nice.I believe it will be a package deal, scope included. You might check it out.

I think that I would stay away from the package deal. A buddy bought one and the scope is highly questionable. For the price, you can pick up the rifle and get a Bushnell Banner.

I have been putting 3200 and 4200s on my rifles as of late. Very nice glass. I recently came into a Marlin Carbon fiber SS 17HMR and did not want to splurge on a scope. Picked up the Bushnell Banner if 4x12 and am very happy with it. I will keep it a fair weather gun so that I do not have to worry about fog and water issues.

i would suggest a Leupold VXII..in 2x7..or..3x9..the Bushnell..Elite 3200'S are fine..i can't comment on the 4200's..i prefer the eye relief the Leupold's offer..the click adjustment's are more positive on the VXII..vs the 3200..it's a few more buck's but worth it..

JMO..

I just picked up a Savage Predator in .204 Ruger. A friend has one in 22-250. Both shoot quite well, as do all others I have heard about. I highly recommend them.

If you don't like heavy barrels you might want to check out the model 11F. I bought one in .223 topped it with a Nikon scope and it is very accurate. When I first sighted it in I was using some cheap federal american eagle ammo just to get it close before I fine tuned it with the good ammo. The american eagle 50 grain hp's shot 1/2" 3 shot groups. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I knew it was gonna be an accurate gun but that really suprised me.

I don't like a heavy barrel either. I know there is only 3/4 lb difference but it adds up. Both are good though.

Edit: Oops, forgot the scope thought. I used to have 3-9 or 4-16 power scopes on my rifles. After having missed many coyotes becasue they were so close, I've since put a 1.5 - 5 power scope on my primary coyote rifle. I haven't used it yet to tell you how I like it.

One thing about the Predator is the barrel. It's referred to as a medium barrel not a heavy barrel. I went with the 11f, because I didn't like the cammo. I wasn't going to have a camo gun and a black scope, and the scope in the package series was junk. If you do buy the package series, make sure you got a little 22lr to put the scope on and get you a real scope.

11F or Stevens
Leupold (For Sure) 2.5-8X36 (you will love it) or 3-9 X ?? in a DedNutz one piece base /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif) Rock Solid setup. ~Ace~

Savage 25 built from the ground up (so says Savage) around the .223 cartridge. It's a medium contoured barrel I believe, which should be close to your heavy barrel desire. Best thing is they are under $400. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Top it off with a 3-9X40 of your choosing (I'd go with a Zeiss Conquest, or Bushnell Elite 4200 or a similar Leupold).

Ace...I have the 2.5-8X36 on my Knight In-Line and like it!

The price of good glass always makes me have fewer guns than I could have. I can afford the gun but I unfortunately won't get one until I have the money for decent glass on it :-(. Scopes are so darned expensive.

I have a Savage 11 model in 30.06 for deer with a Bushnell Elite 4200. Not a pretty or fancy gun but it works so well I could not replace it. Savage reminds me of Mossberg...blue collar gun with an olympic reliability and reliability. I should have never bought the HOWA :-0.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone..I really appreciate it. That Savage Predator seems to be a favorite on here. I'll have to pick one up and see how it feels in the hand.
