Which Savage Rifle in .223 Rem and Which Leupold Scope?

The Leupold scope that I prefer is the VX II 4 to 12, I have several on different rifles and they work well for me. TAhey are the same size as the 3 to 9 with a little more power and if you can't find the target at four power you won't at three power either.
 
Shots to 200 or even 300 don't require a 12x scope scope...
Heck I have fixed 6x's on all my biggger game guns...

Pick a scope that fits you the best...

Greg that's true. But I like that little extra when I doing load development to see just how good they are on paper. Try shooting really small groups at 200 with say a 2 X 7 which is one of my favorite calling scopes.

The Field of View is much smaller on the 4-12, to small for most close quarters calling situations in the real World.. the 2.5-8 has a larger field of view than the 3-9... and Plenty of power to 300 yards and beyond. ~Ace~
 
STD; I use the flip open caps on about all of my scopes I use in all kinds of weather, mine are Uncle Mike's but I would think the Leupold screw-in caps would be better but you have to have an adjustable objective to use them. As far as field of view if your rifle fits you and your scope is placed right your target will be in view when you shoulder your rifle whatever the field or power is.

Oh I see, sorry...

Didn't know the 4-12 was strictly a load developer scope...

As just mentioned, the FOV in the 4-12 is much lower than the 3-9...

Shooting a running coyote on 3x of a 3-9 is much, much easier than shooting a running coyote at 4x of a 4-12 scope. As least these are my experiences...

I also love the 2-7 for a calling gun, great choice...
