Which way to put the wind?

Thanks for all the replies! This is great.

I have one idea: How about I put my call 30+ yards crosswind of me, so that my scent going downwind is 30+ yards parallel to the call, and therefore least likely to be picked up by a coyote coming in on the call from downwind?

It seems like, as a right handed shooter, I can watch ahead of me and to my left the best:

If the the wind were going from my right to my left, I could face my e-call, which would be crosswind to me, watching for coyotes coming in at all angles toward the call, and also watch downwind as my secondary choice?

It sounds like there is no wrong answer. Once again, I love all the advice!
After having generally poor luck for the last two years of coyote calling, I just upgraded my Ghillie suit camo, abd I got a new dedicated Coyote gun, and finally got an electronic caller (I have been mouth calling for years and I think my luck has been bad because they look right at me). I am ready to go have some fun and succeed at this.

Thaddeus, maybe when you're mouth-calling and they look right at you, it's when you smile and wave at them that gives you away. ;-)

Sounds like you are talking about the same basic technique I try to use. One person can only cover so much angle with eyes and gun, so it seems the odds favor watching crosswind to downwind in your arc of vision. With your gun pointed from a natural sitting position straight downwind, you can cover some degrees to either side of that direction to catch the ones circling from crosswind to downwind and try to nail them before they hit your scent. Your 'backdoor' will be upwind and slightly to one side, and you just have to keep your fingers crossed that one coming in from there will try to cross to downwind behind you, and come by in front of your muzzle.

That's how I would do it, not that proven myself to be an expert at this. :-( heheheheh

Good topic here! Lots of diffrent replys! Everyone has there own way, and they work!

I think the area you hunt has alot to do with how I would set up. Here in the East I dont have much open area, sometimes I haft to get right down in the brush, clearcuts, hardwoods or what ever. I haft to get right in there with them. I like a cross wind but I cant always set up that way. It depends on the area and the lay of the land, with all the hills and hollows here the wind may change 3 times while Im geting into an area to set up. And depending on the day and area the termals may change you scent flow anyway.

What I try to do is look at each stand, check the wind, and use the lay of the land to the best I can. I may not be able to see 40 yards down wind if that, so I try to use the land to bring them to me. If im standing in front of a hollow I think the coyotes are holed up in, I will see if there is anyway I can keep them from geting down wind, rocky bluff, open fields, if so I will always put that to my down wind side. They dont like to cross open areas here and will avoid them most of the time.

Some areas I call are so thick that I cant cover much area, so I will pick the best set up I can try to put myself in the coyotes path that he will use. Fence line, ditches, old growed up roads, brush lines, and play the wind the best I can. Alot of this just has to do with the area you hunt and the lay of the land, and what you have to work with. If I am hunting with a partner....he will always be watching the down wind side!

Today was the first day this season i could go out for coyotes, thought i would add a bit. I was reading this thread, and givin it some thought, so i went out this morning and found a good spot facing a little cross wind at about 20-30 degrees of downwind, big openings were cross wind and down, and lots of cover directly at my back. Was callin for 5 minutes or so, when a 'yote caught me off guard directly downwind, at about thirty yards. I lip squeaked a little, but he pretty much had me made, with my gun down of course. he came about ten yards closer, then turned to get out, he went out to about 40 before i could drop him. 22 win mag at the base of his skull. had to look long and hard for the hole, pretty dark red coyote. sorry, no pics. anyway, the point is, if I had been facing into the wind, i never would have seen the dog before he left. and he would have been 30 yrds or so behind me! likin this calling with the wind/ slightly crosswind stuff. looking forward to saturday.
