Who Hunts Coyotes All Year????

Do you hunt coyotes into the spring and summer?

If you do what kind of success do you have compared to the winter hunts.I know that alot of hunters only target coyotes in the winter when the pelts are in prime condition.

Are they harder to call in when the weather is nicer because food is easier to come by?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Some places don't have a season year round. Some hunters don't hunt in the spring and summer because the coyotes/ fox etc. are rearing young. Some guys think they need a break and feel it isn't right to shoot a bitch and have the young starve in the den. It is a very emotional and controversial subject, and can get quite heated.

If it is legal in your area, then you have to make up your own mind.

I hunt year round. in the winters i hunt for myself But spring and summer i hunt ,trap, snare for the Ranchers had a goat rancher call last spring he had lost over $20,000.00 in livestock losses i went in and killed 27 coyotes the first week in. When the bitches have the pups on the ground is when all the problems start. As fare as calling i use the pup distress and the male challenge the most in spring and a lot of snares. As far as rite or wrong it all depends on who you ask.

My success is better in the spring and summer, and it's legal where I live. Prey sounds don't do much, but male and female territorial howls, male challenge and pup distress sounds bring them right in, usually at a run. It's easy to do a lot of sets because you're not fighting snow, and you burn a fraction of the fuel. The biggest downside is that mosquitos can be bad,(Bug spray) and standing crops hurt visibility (Hills and slopes). It also cuts into your fishing time!(No known cure)
As for right or wrong, I suppose that depends on where you live. I don't force my idea of morality on anyone else.

From late summer until early spring, I hunt coyotes anywhere I can get permission to hunt. After that, I give them a break to raise their puppies. Personally, I can't stand the thought of coyote puppies crying for a mother that's never coming back; slowly starving to death. I want them to raise their puppies so I can have more coyotes to hunt later in the year.

But I don't judge or disrespect people who choose to hunt during this time.

One exception I make is that I will hunt during this time for farmers who are losing livestock or dogs to coyotes.

I hunt all year, but for the pup rearing season. I only have my out of state son for the summers, so that is when we hunt. Then and for a week or so over Xmas, which we kind of dedicate to trying to get a cat in.

But, once March hits, that's it for me until July when the pups are up and about. I won't be the cause of a pup starving back at a den. In my area, I know they're out there fending for themselves come July, because I've called enough of the cute little bat eared buggers in! See them often enough on their own when out walking or driving as well. I won't shoot a pup. Come November, and through March, all bets are off, however.

My opinion is that as far as pure sport hunting, I would want to stay away from killing the females when they are rearing pups....by the same token, as stated above, If I was loosing livestock, all bets are off.

HI me too my season goes out the 28th of this month and the game and fish put a 2 dog limit a day on coyotes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif But you can shoot as many foxes and cates when season is in as you want too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif man the game and Fish has there heads up thee BU$ts you see dog sign ever where they souldnt have a limit on coyotes but may be on red fox if they are going to but a limit on some thing because you dont see that many red foxes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif VM

I'm done shooting till October 05. I leave the critters alone and let them make more targets for next year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Unless my friend calls and says he has yote problems on his farm.

Time to do some reloading and get my T/C scoped and ready to go for this next season. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'll hunt to about mid-March or so. I have never taken a wet bitch even through the end of March, nor have I shot an obviously pregnant one.

As far as the pups starving to death, I would think that some other predator, like eagles, owls, etc. would make a meal out of them.

I have some good action calling them in around late may and june here in ga but have only killed them in winter or early spring before turkey season.

I have some pretty good luck on late summer hunts as well. Usually after we knock the hayfields down there will be a few coyotes hunt it for a few evenings afterwards. I personally hate hot weather but I don't mind climbing up on a roundbail just before dark and watching a couple summertime coyotes sneak in looking for an easy meal. I like the cotton tail babies and rodent sounds for summertime hunting. Pup-in-distress works pretty well also from June-August.

Give them a break in summer.....let them raise the young and they will make the calling better for you next fall.

D.W.C. - I don't hunt too much in the summer... I hate hot weather. I spend that time fishing, swimming or talking about hunting on the internet. If I spent as much time calling in the summer as I do the fall/winter I would definatly expect to kill more animals during the summer. The success rate on calling animals in jumps up quite a bit between June-August around here. I may go out 8-10 times a summer and kill 2-4 dogs in the process. Daylight hunting only.

I usually use the summertime hunts to secure hunting rights on new farms for the regular season. Deprevation coyote control is one sure way to get on a farmers good side... if he watches em' walk off with a calf or chicken in their mouth you look like a knight in shining armor rolling in with your calling rifle and camo. Next thing you know you're running a trapline across his place on the way to your deer stand! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
