I don't have any dogs or a shotgun to use for rabbits. Well, I have 2 labs but theyre not the hunting type haha. Anyways, I was wondering who hunts without dogs and has success.

Without dogs is the only way we hunt rabbits since loosing our beagle. Dad had her from the time she was a pup and carried her around in the chest pocket on his shirts until she was big enough to walk around by herself. Since she died from old age at 13 dad decided he didnt want another one. Guess he figured she couldnt be replaced. She was by far the best dog I have ever hunted with. With that being said these were all killed last year or the year before on my grandpas 80 acre farm hunting briar patches. All were shot with either .22lr or .17hmr and were killed in about 2 1/2 hours time without dogs. Excuse the crappy picture, I couldnt find my sd card so I had to take a picture of a picture but you get the point. Josh

I mostly run them with dogs and will not shoot one sitting, but if I had to do it by myself without dogs. I'd be kick'n brush piles and shooting at them on the jump with a 410 handgun... Puts a little fun in to it by shooting them on the jump...
By the way, if you can kill that many without dogs, can I come and bring my dogs and hunt with you?????

Tyler,
You can track rabbits in snow and headshoot them out of their bed with a .22 rifle or pistol. I've killed a train load that way over the years. You can also kick brush piles, fence row cover, downed tree tops, tall grassy areas, ect. and take them on the fly with a small gauge shotgun, light loads of #6's, and an open choke. A good pack of beagles is the most fun of course, but not having beagles shouldn't keep you from collecting some rabbit for the skillet.

The northern part of the state has had several snows already. My part of south Missouri is due for some Friday night and over the weekend, then again mid-week next week.

The way we hunt them briar pacthes is one guy will make a path through the middle and the rabbits will usually come to the edge of the briar patch. Move so that you can get a good clear shot without any chance of hitting the guy in the middle and we kill alot this way. Also the guy in the middle is usually packing a .22 pistol so that they can get a quick shot off at any rabbits that decide not to move. We have killed as many as 8 rabbits out of a briar patch about two times the size of your average car. We got a 60% chance of some snow Friday so hoping that it comes through so we can get out and kill some after my mornings coyote hunt of course.

I thought I was the only one who shot bunnies with a bow , now I'm not alone . It is a great way to keep in practice with the stick slinger

i never had sucess without dog/dogs.i agree with bowmaster.a place where you get that many without dogs must be loaded.i would say its been my expirence where i hunt anyways, that for everyone i /we jump the dogs find 15-20 we never have seen.
i have dogs and will travel-lol

I shoot mostly with handguns in the sage brush flats, draws, and coulees. But have sniped them (head shooting) in the rocks, PD towns and along hay fields with everything from 22-250's down to the 22 hornet and 17 Rem.

When I do use a dog it is to retrieve in these places

i hunt them without rabbits! only way i can since i dont have dogs!

normally me and a good friend or two go out with shotguns and hunt them, we switch out playing the dog part by going through the briars, brambles, and bushes. we normally get a few this way, and get to spend time with good friends!

call me rover cause when i was a kid i was the dog. seems like all my buddies have beagles. but i have never hunted with dogs usually the youngest of the group gets to be the dog in my family. if i could ever get rid of these dog chow burners of my wifes i would have a pack of beagles to run i guess i live in rabbit dog heavon here in the bluegrass state.

I was raised with bird dogs and if I had suggested taking one to chase rabbits, I would have had my hide tanned for just thinking out loud...

I've never used a dog to hunt rabbits and like 'emtpredator', a lot of the time when pop or my grandfather was along, I was the dog, assigned to kick them up...
