Who hunts with a Ghillie Suit?

Well, the next time I'm sighting a rifle in at the lake/range I'll sure be watching for you. Course don't stand up on those rocks at the 300 mark as you know there are quite a few nuts who'll "sight-in" on you.

I've got one of those green/leafy camo, light-weight pants/jacket suits that can be used in any weather. Wear it over shorts/t-shirt when warm or over really warm clothing when cold. Christmas gift so this year will prove if it is worth using.

CharlesB, I see you are familiar with the Brady Rod and Gun Club range /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I live in Kansas now (because of uncle sam) and wish we had one like that out here but I dont think there is such a thing as an unsupervised gun range around here.
 
I don't know if anyone has noticed the patterned ghillie blind on ghilliesuits.com but it is 9 feet by 30 inches for 22 dollars. I got that and cut it up to make my own for 30 dollars after shipping. Can't really tell it is patterned but i just rearranged the jute. made pants and a pullover type thing with a hood, had a little left over and use that for my gun. hell of a deal and is nice and thick for real cheap, not like those cheap ghillie suits that u can see through. Haven't looked at the website to see if the deal is still there, but it took no time at all to make.
 
Nice, the thing with the jute is there doesnt have to be a bunch, just enough to break your outline up, you would add natural vegitation that matches your surroundings when you are in position or while stalking. I dont think it is all that critical while hunting tho as most times I am in a tee shirt and blue jeans and manage just fine.
 
Light, cool, easy to pack and most of all very inexpensive.

All you need is a $14.95 natural camo netting from Wal Mart.

1. Cut netting for proper length. (so you can walk without stepping on netting)
2. Put on face mask.
3. Place netting on the top of your head.
4. Put on boonie hat to hold netting in place.

Note: Wear with natural camo shirt, pants, gloves, etc.

You can also use extra netting to cover your rifle.

Thats nice, I was going to make one kinda like that out of an old camo net I had but I needed the one I have anyways for work so I just use that. I see you are useing a DCU boonie cap, I am a firm believer in lighter colors as a base cause you can always darken it but never lighten it.
 
Your posts have given me an idea for a suit. My preference in camo has been surplus Military as they are much tougher than the usual civilain versions. As spring turkey season comes here in Texas begining next month I'll use the store bought suit as it is light weight and leafy green and that will match the spring foliage. However, by utilizing a camo set of fatigues, noting your preference for a light back ground / dark overlay, by adding jute colored strips to the fatigues might just make a tough, all-terrain utility suit. It will be a dark back ground and lighter fill on top, reverse of what you describe. Any thoughts comments?

Yes, many a round has gone down-range at the Rod & Gun range in McCullough county and that type of arrangement is becoming quite scarce.

I would stay away from dark colors in the suit, at least not alot, maybe some sparse greens, but browns and tans are the best IMHO, the base should be lighter colors as shadows can always darken it, and if you put some natural vegitation on it when you are on your hunt it will blend in great. Think about it, there is always browns and tans like dirt, tree branches, dead leaves, dry spots, but not always darker colored stuff, and even in summer there is still dead or light colored areas around, especially when everything gets burnt up. It might not matter much for hunting tho, as long as your outline is broken up but a good rule of thumb is go light and add dark with natural vegitation.

Here are the pics . I wasnt wearing any face mask , gloves or camo. I wasn't hunting , we were just shooting the bull , having a beer or two and setting up camp. Im still in my work pants.

They dont have it listed on their sight. You will have to call and talk to Jerry. It is the same jacket Byron South uses, just a different color. No jute. Byron uses all dark green. I got the mix of light and dark. Redfrog uses the 3/4 length with all light and no jute.
 
Crapshoot, thats cool, it looks like it would be good for hunting. I am a bit more anal on my camo tho, notice how it makes you look like a dark spot out there, kinda draws the eye to it, I would still have to go with a lighter color if it were me but I doubt the coyotes will care /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Your right DM1975 I look like a dark bush instead of a light one. I thought the same as you untill I saw first hand Gerald Stewart in his dark green leafy patern camo suite hunting in AZ . He blended in quite well.
 
I would still rather look like nothing rather than a large dark bush, Just my opinion, but like I said, it looks great for hunting. If you notice in in my photos, not to say mine is better, it is all personal prefference, mine blends more into looking like much of nothing rather than drawing the eye to something. Like I said that is just my prefference and I think yours looks great too.

I did the same thing except I cut it about 8 feet long and cut a sideways slice in it large enough to get my head through and wear it like a poncho.

It stores in my pack till I sit down and goes on easy enough. I left another section to use as a hat, or I wear a leafy cammo from Wal mart.

Nice and cheap and easy to carry and use.
