Who is the better cowboy John Wayne or Clint Eastwood?

Yeah and how many kids saw his movies with a "war related theme" and signed up to look for glory and honor only to get wasted in the Nam. Those were the times we lived in.
Could that be why he felt bad?

John Wayne. I do like Clint's work over the years, but Wayne played the better cowboy. This may well simply be a function of the nature of roles they got cast it.

Jeff,
A lot of people refuse to believe what is public knowledge about "the Duke".
Good post.

Clint Eastwood is definately the "grittier" of the two.

I also like Robert Duval, and Steve McQueen and Sam Elliot.

But, don't forget:

Tom Selleck: Quiggly, Shadow Riders, Sacketts, and several others.

James Arness: Gun Smoke (Matt Dillion), How the West was Won (Zeb)

The Cartwright's from Bonanza

Now, if we were talking best Western WRITER, I would have to say Louis L'mour hands down.

Good collection of actors going here, my all time favorite "role" is Robert DuVall as Bluebonnet in Open Range. Cowboy, mentor, leader, father figure, and booty kicking tough guy when the chips fall. Todd

I would have to agree with yellowhammer, there are alot of good ones out there, JW was good though "fill your hands you sonsa b***hes" got to love it!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Selleck, Duvall, Eastwood, they all play their own part though.

John Wayne would have to get my pick. Of course, all the others mentioned are excellent also. I have a good friend who went to work for Robert Duval about the time Lonesome Dove was being filmed. I met him several times. I liked his character in the movie, but in real life he is a little eccentric. I also liked the movie 'The Good Old Boys' with Tommy Lee Jones. It isn't your usual western with shoot outs or bad guys, but as far as 'cowboy' movies go, it was one of the best.
YH, if you like Louis L'Amoir, check out some of Elmer Keltons books. He would be my favorite writter.
This has been a good thread! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

John Wayne By far a true Patriot, and the best.!.
Eastwood a close second.
There is no way to fault John Wayne for not enlisting he was 37, and did alot more good by staying here than being a body on the trenches.
Before anyone flames me for this, I Did enlist and Served in Desert storm. I see Clinton as a draft dodger but never "The Duke"

Ben Johnson is dang good too. I can't remember all of his roles (Round Craptree in the Sacketts was one).

Ben Johnson played James Pepper in Chisum too. He was a real ranch hand and rodeo performer before he made movies. Story goes that he was told to take a load of horses to California and decided to stick around a while.

Shame on you!!!
John is the God.
Clint has the Squint, the tough guy side down pat, he learned it from John.
But the "gee gollee whiz , cowboy, that turns tough", John is the man.
The old time scout, range master, John.
The delivery of the "step across this line" line, John!
Carl

But, for old time sakes, if it is strictly between Wayne & Eastwood, as a "cowboy" in westerns...then Duke gets the nod.

However, if we open the field to any & all actors...my "top 10" "strictly cowboy", not "gunfighter", picks......

#1) Duke
#2) Harry Carrey, Jr. (I know, his last name actually only has 1 "r", but the dang system bleeps that word, for some reason.)
#3) Ben Johnson
#4) Randolph Scott
#5) Joel McCrae
#6) Gary Cooper
#7) Jimmy Stewart
#8) Chill Wills
#9) Glenn Ford
#10) Richard Boone

Guilty, I was bored. I do like to go back & poke around in the dust. I have found some interesting info there. This is just one of the oldies that caught my eye. I didn't stick to the question as is obvious. A lot of the old western actors were very good, they just didn't play the lead roles. I liked James Arness in Gunsmoke, but I liked Ken Curtis more. I like John Wayne in about 1/2 of his movies. I liked Clint Eastwood the in The Outlaw Josey Wales. For me they are about even. I don't remember alot of the old tv 'series actors' names, but there were many very good ones. James Garner is a good one that seems to get overlooked.

I suppose the Oscars speak for themselves. "Unforgiven" is the movie all other westerns wish they could be.
Clint can act and direct better than most folks who've ever lived. He's the real thing when it comes to the box office.

I don't approve of Clint's personal lifestyle, but as far as talent?? Eastwood 100%

John enjoyed more westerns in his slow drawn out excuse for lines. But Eastwood just blew them to [beeep].

Two different actors in two different eras, not really a fair comparison. But if the "Duke" met William Munney in the alley, well let's not pretend Wayne could have stood half a chance.

Now John Wayne is no slouch granted, but if given the chance he would bow before the one and only western great. And if he decided not to bow?? Well I'll see you in [beeep] William Munny. I reckon so.

Did I mention I'm an Eastwood fan? LOL
