That's a very bad idea. It's about 30 thousands short. If' you are using 223 you're really running the risk of a carbon ring.

A 17-223 is just that, a 223 necked to 17 with no other changes. 17 Remnington brass is made from 222 Mag brass or 204 brass. Adam

I wondered when this would be set straight.
Steves pages say's it from 223 but he's wrong!!
It's from the 222 Mag case as is the 204 Ruger.
Making 17 Rem from 204 is not the easiest either without the proper dies.
While 223 can be necked down and will shoot in a 17 Remington, it's not factory speck length and will do what ab sayes it will.
If thats all you use you may get by, but i doubt you'll ever reach the lands for the more accurate loads.
Everybody does things as they see fit so nothing is totally wrong, but the real 17 Rem brass is from the 222mag brass...

A pistol is a different animal completly. Try and shoot 60K PSI in a revolver. It's your rifle and your choice, it's not something I would advise to anyone else though. By that same token you inadverntly advocate shooting 222 ammo in a 223 chamber, came case diameter bullet, similar powder charge, shorter cartridge. Now I am not trying be an [beeep] here, I am pointing out that the wrong ammo is the wrong ammo. Adam

I shoot a 17 Mach IV myself. I had reservations about this round when I had it built. I just really couldn't see how such a small bullet in such a small case could produce much killing power. That was 4yrs ago and I've lost 1 coyote. This little cartridge reaches out there pretty good too. I have several 200+ yd kills and it will reach farther I'm sure. I'm shooting 29gr Kindlers and accuracy at 300yds is right around MOA.

I currently have a 17 REM and a 17 WCH. I never have felt under gunned in the field. I shoot 25 grain bergers in the 17 REM and 30 grain kindlers in my WCH! Turns coyotes to jelly !!

This is a VERY intersting thread ! I would be intersted in hearing more about the 17 WCH and mor about others expierience with the 17's.
I have several centerfire 17 calibr rifles and enjoy all of them !

I think what Lyman is refering to is that the .222 case is the grandaddy of all the above mentioned cases.
While the .222 magnum/.204 have the same length case as a 17 Remington they have much different case capacities.

+1

I think this is the most the 17 caliber has been talked about on here for quite awhile. I'm loving it.

I love the .17 Rem. I use a 25 gr Berger MHP and it does great on coyotes. Have not had a shot at a cat yet with this load but never an exit yet on the coyotes.

I am really liking what this round does. My only complaint to this point is how dirty it shoots. I only put about 10 rounds through it before my bolt started dragging. No big deal, quick brush out, and some light oil and we are good to go again.

I know that this will be a round that I plan on using for many years to come.

Not a problem I've had in the past. What powder and bullet are you using?
W760/H414 or RL15 behind a 25gr. bullet have been a bit dirty burning, but H322, IMR4320, and IMR8208XBR behind a 25gr. are pretty clean burning in my guns. H414/W760 with a 30gr. work pretty well.
If your bolt race way is getting dirty rather quickly, maybe the load isn't expanding the brass enough. Just a thought.

A guy I grew up with Inherited a .17-222 I remember paying top dollar for ammo when we were kids. But we looked online a few years ago and weren't able to find any. Is this the same as the 17 rem?

It's a beautiful custom rifle with a Mauser action, ivory inlays in the stock, and an older leupold scope on it. Breaks my heart to know that thing is collecting dust in his aunts closet. Ive offered to buy it several times.

While the 17-222 was very popular back in the late 60's and early 70's it is not the 17 Rem. The 17 Remington is based off of the 222Mag.
Sounds like your Aunts rifle might be a Wichita Rifle. Beautiful and well made rifles.
