Well I broke down and ordered a Ghillie suit today.I have never owned or used one in the 30 years that I have been calling. But it seems like all the guys say they are the best thing since sliced bread. So do all you guys use them or are they just a bunch of hipe. Thanks in advance.

I've made two from two types of camo blind cover cloths. Both are ponchos go on and off easily. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
One light weight, skeeter netting, 6-8 inch cut strips of the darker hemp cloth, used black wire bunddle ties to the netting from inside.
One meddium weight, same dark cloth strips with bunddle ties on a rust color cloth.
Face mask and even attached some camo over the hat to help break up it's outline. One mask I cut up and used to attach to the lower back part of the hat to help form a shade for the back of my neck. It does get hot here in South Texas. Don't forget the gloves.
Well there's my inexpensive Gillie "suits". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good Hunt'n and God Bless.

SavTxCajuin,
I've got one that I ordered from Cabelas in the mossy oak break up. I'm here in Texas too, It's hot and bulky but it is the best in camo. If you do things right, you will not need a rifle, you will need a sawed off shotgun. I'm going to break the suit out this weekend. Good luck

Iron Pony, and others.
My light wt. is of the Advantage pattern and the mid-wt uses some of the same with burlap Deep woods. Hope you hydrate alot before putting it on,
Gator Aid mixed with water. I carry a quart of the GA in the pack. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
From what I've read in other sections here it's all about not moving more than blending in. But whatever gets me close enough will work.

Good luck on the hunt. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Take care and God Bless ya.

Ya, me too and this is during the 7:30PM or later.

It's the Coors Lt from during the week comming out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Anyone else have their own hydration drinks for the summer?? I've also been known to use an onion and water mix (dad'gum-it that's what I been forgetting!!!) to help keep the skeeters off.
 And dusting down. Putting on a very light coat of dust on exposed skin helps to. I would do this during field deployments at Savanna, GA. and Ft. Hood, TX. while being a grunt.
Course don't go anywhere near the public looking and smelling like this. They'll shoot you themselves. Ha Ha /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif The smell of onion may be good for the yotes.

Damn, not till just now did I remember this. Gona get this together for the weekend. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks Iron Pony for jaring the cobwebs loose.
Have a good Hunt and God Bless. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Here is my Ghilli. It works pretty well in my area. I am working on a new cover for my boomer.

Let see what you guys are using.

Hey Byran, Can I get a better look at the one I saw in your video?

The one's we used in the video are from Rancho Safari. They are great in open terain. I've called many coyotes not wearing any camo, but for filming the video we wanted to take advantage of everything available. They sure do a great job of breaking the human form up.
I don't have any pictures I can post, and If I did I wouldn't know how to post them. Brand new to the computer. I'm learning every day though.

Thanks and Good Huntin

I like to carry a mixture for the purpose of hydration................................

Most of the time i bring a mixture of Lord Calvert and diet coke. It keeps me from moving into the stand to quickly:)

But on really hot days i wear my camelback and fill it with water and a little bit of that Pedialite stuff. It's the stuff that little kids are given by their mother's after extended periods of diarrhea.

It doesn't taste to good but it really helps me stay hydrated. It works well the morning after a good night of drinking too, kills that head pain pretty quick.

Thanks,
Joe

187Coyote,
Perfect camo for the area! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Here I can't get pron, sit Indian style (bad knees, legs fall asleep) and cause of FIRE ANTS!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
I use a kids chair, 1ft. tall keeps me low to the ground without coming in contact, and a cheap ltwt tripod, legs covered with camo tape and a U shaped cup attached to the top of it. (a 2.5" tube cut in half bolted to the camera rest.) A mono-pod with the same attachment would work too.

My boots are sprayed down with Off or Cutters. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well I'll get around to posting a pic as soon as I find out how.
Good Hunt'n and God Bless.

This is a hard one. Do you guys really think camo helps? Some of the very best predator callers in the country don't even use the stuff. So whats up with that? Does a guy have to look like some kind of special forces type person to kill coyotes or is big business talking you into it? Something to think about, Good Hunting.

Well I for one was talked into Camo by reading things here, seeing other's pictures and I'm a begainer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Those that don't use camo must have their tactics down to a fine art. I've read here too that not moving is the key. Well hunting alone I've got to move to see my 6 if anything is coming. CYA thing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My best advantage with the camo is less skeeters getting to me.LOL The light weight poncho isn't heavy or overly hot. It's skeeter netting with a printed desin on one side. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

There is as many ways as there are people cause no two think alike, great isn't it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good Hunt'n God Bless.

Danny B,
I know exactly what you mean, and here lately I have been using a camo jacket and cap. The face mask was getting in the way too much. In terrain where there are trees, bushes, tall grass, soap weeds or even a dang big rock to sit in front of I don't believe camo to be necessary. I have also called wide open prairie with just ordinary camo clothing, but I did go prone a lot. In this open country stuff, I do think that a man could call MORE coyotes if he wore a good Ghillie suit. I bought one, but it is still just like new because I have never used it in the field. LOL

Im not a fan of ghillie suites, or the trendy new 3-D stuff so many guys are fond of. I live in a part of the country where everything that grows, has thorns, barbs, stickers and a variety of other appendages that snag and tear at any clothing other than smooth surfaces. Im modest in my camo choices anyway, a simple shirt, cap with attached face mask, and sometimes I'll throw on some camo pants over my levis. When wearing a ghillie or the leafy wear stuff, a short walk thru the desert leaves half your camo hanging where you just been:). Hard to make the claim camo isnt needed, it can't hurt, but it's way over rated.

ChileRojo,
The need for specific camo color or pattern certainly is over rated, at least when it comes to color blind animals like coyotes and deer. Turkeys are something else again though. Ever ask your camo clad friends which camo color and pattern a deer uses? Then think about what creature of that size do you know of that is harder to see if it is standing real still and in the shadows? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good point, Rich. Hadn't thought of it that way. I'm an advocate of camo. I use natural gear and think it's one of the best. Does it help? I think so, but I hunt farm country where a lot of my out front area may be mowed hay meadows with an inch of cover, or even a barren field of what was supposed to be winter wheat. I have a ghillie suit and find it valuable under the right circumstances. I've got a number of areas that have little pockets of cover where coyotes will bed down for the day. More often than not, there just isn't anyplace to sit that my outline is broken, so I'm forced to make my own. I've used my ghillie to mimic a bush on the side of a hill and been very effective with it. It works especially well in older growth rangeland where there are other small redcedar trees around. I've also used it to set up fifty yards into a field of milo stubble where I had no other cover. In those circumstances, it works very well. But it's a tool. I have it at my disposal if I need it but I definitely don't use it on every stand, not even a majority of them.

Lance H,
I agree with your last post 100 percent! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I remember making a post recently about using ghillie suits in wide open prairie but I am so old that I just can't remember where I said it.
