Who uses a Ghillie suit

Danny B- No that big companies didn’t talk me in to it. I am a fan of concealment. My suits are all hand made. The only businesses getting my money are the local surplus and fabric stores. I have taken many a coyote without any camo at all. I do think it helps in a few ways. You can get away with more movement and you can sit out in the open.
I use this suit mostly for ground squirrel work. A lot of the range rats that I pursue have been educated by many of the farmers around here. I have much better success while using my ghillie.

The best part of the suits is having someone walk within feet of you and not know you are there until you get up and greet them

I did not need to buy a Ghillie suit, nor did I need to buy a MAK 90 and have ten 30 round magazines and a closet full of ammo for it. I did not need a class three license. I did not need a conceal and carry permit here in Texas. I did not need a 300 Win Mag for Texas Whitetail deer and I did not need that additional shot of Tequila the other night. LOL, I wanted it, plain and simply wanted them all. I’ve got a right to it and this is the USA, and I got it Brother. As you can tell, I’ve heard the, “You don’t need that” before. Is anyone else on board with wanting something and getting it? Having said that, the Ghillie suit is so much fun and you can really hide from the crows and turkeys with it as well. Watch out, crows will get close enough to pick your eyes out. If I were a bad shot, I’d highly recommend one because you get very close to the action. One time I was deer hunting and the neighbor came up to the fence about 50 yards away from where I was. He did not know I was there and I scared the #$*# out of him when I started to talk to him. I was in plain view and he still could not find me even when we were having a conversation and then I stood up and he saw me. Something similar happened when the when a guy came out to shoe the horses one time. He never knew I was there. He walked right by me. Be careful, our Brahma bull does not like the suite, he got between me and the heard one time and that was the last time I put the Ghillie suit on with him in the pasture. I just knew I would be playing Rodeo clown but I got lucky and just slowly walked away.

IronPony pulled the words right out of my mouth. It's not the "need for" but the "gotta have" that makes us get this kind of stuff.

SavTxCajun, I made a couple of ghillie ponchos out of the same material that you did. I made mine about 8 yrs. ago for crow hunting. Worked so well I tried it out for coyotes, and have been using it ever since. Not for every go-out, but a lot.

I got my Fall Cabela's Catalog the other day. I had a chance to look through it while warming my throne last nite and came across this.

This looks like a good little suit. For any of you that are looking to try a Ghillie but don't want to spend 40+ hours or $300+, try this one. I will probably order it when I get back.

You can read more about it at

Hi Pony- Is yours built on a net? The one that I posted looks to be built on heavy netting. (look at the top of the pants) I was actually looking to make another suit out of netting like that. I am probably the only one here that can't leave things alone. But would need to match that suit to the location and season in which I was hunting. The store bought suits that I have seen in the past were material sewn on to clothing. While they look good at first, they leave little room for adjustments in the field. Pony, can you add and remove material to your suit?

Here is a question for some of the twisted suiters’, do you ever bring extra material (i.e. jute) with you to the field?

The suit is built on a net. It breathes! Whew! You could add material if you wanted to but I dont think you have to. If I had a digital camera, I'd send you pics.

CCI builds ghillie suits to fit your needs and custom dye to match the colors. These are the real deal, sold to civilian, law enforcement and military. www.ghillie.com or try custom concealment Inc.

yotecaller,

For what it's worth, I did a piece for Trapper & Predator Caller that appears on page 52 of the August issue just being delivered. Karl Saknit and Bob/SoCal from right here at PM contributed to the piece and it turned out very well. Hope everyone/ someone gets something from it.

Hey guys. I got a great example of how Ghillies work. I got home today and did my chores. About 6:30 my dogs start barking at something over the hill. They have alerted me to a few pigs in the past. My neighbor has seen a young coyote twice in the last two weeks. I was hoping my dogs might have picked up some coyote sent. I grabbed my ghillie and headed up the hill. When I got up to the top and looked over. I sat up there for about 15 minutes and saw nothing but a bunch of ground squirrels down in the dry creek bed. Never passing up a chance to pop some Range rats, I walked to about 150yds from their little town. I crawled to a rise that had a clear view of the whole town. I took a shot and spread one out with a 139gr redhead. About 5 minutes later his buddies come looking for him and another one got spread out in the creek bed. As I get ready to rack another round, I hear a snort behind me. Now I just popped off two rounds from my 7 mag. I slowly look behind me and see a dow looking around for the source of the booming. She was about 75 yrs behind and to the left of me. The wind was in my favor. She snorted and took heavy steps in my direction. I have seen this in the past but not this close. When she got to about 10yds from me I snorted back. If she were wearing panties, they would have been soiled because she had a steady stream of pellets flowing from her pooper as she bounced off. Now catching a person off guard is one thing, catching an animal is a once in a life time moment. Man that was cool. "10 yds". I have got to do that again. I popped 4 more rats and walked back home.

Now I know that my suit works.

Hey 187, any public land with hogs on it in your area? Trying to pin down a few spots for the fall.
PS you better watch out for snakes crawlin' around like that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Lonehowl- I live about 20 miles from Parkfield. There are lots of hogs there. I usually take a few passing through every year. Hogs can be taken all year in my area and a book of 5 tags will run you under $8. There is some public lands in the area but I haven't needed them for pig sence I bought my place. Darrin

First I would like to say if the camo is something you like to wear then do it. I dont think it hurts when calling. I never wore camo when i first started calling and killed truck loads of coyotes. I still think the key is to stay still no movement. dont hide behind that bush get in front of it and dont move. Now I use camo when I hunt not to hide from the coyotes but from people. I hunt alone 99% of the time and miles from anyone. I just dont trust people I hunt private ranches usually 50 miles from the ranch house and if someone else is out there they are most likly poaching, the best contact is no contact. Get a lic. number and let the ranch handdle it.

well ive decied that i want to build one. if anyoen has any photos that might help or any tips. im gonna try to start on it thi swed or thursday. gonna have soem trouble finding tiem in between school and football. ill let yall know how it goes
