Why are cheap savages such tack drivers?

I bought a new model 10 in 7/08. Couldn't go wrong, a Savage chambered in an accurate cartridge!!

Nope, could not get it to shoot with any combos or with factory ammo. Best it ever did in a five shot group was 2.5 MOA!

Even at that, it's obvious from the experience of others that they are good rifles. I have my eye out for a beater short action that I can rebarrel and restock for a winter project.
 
Took my new Axis out today. I had four starter loads just to get a place to start. Five 55gr Nightmare Extremes SP w/8208, five 55gr Hornady SP w/8208, five 60gr Hornady V-Max w/8208 and five 53gr V-Max w/8208. First three loads were bad, two were real bad, one not terrible, but larger than I was hoping for. Then the 53 gr V-Max. Bingo, nice tight little half inch group. On the other hand, I have a Model 11 HB in 6.5 Creedmoor that is kicking my butt trying to find a load it likes.

Yes I have my own definition of tack driver,,,,,is it the same as yours or the OP's idk? That is why I asked what his definition was.

If your Savage Axis shoots 1/2-3/4" I'd say you have a good shooting hunting rifle for not a lot of money. Would I call it a tack driver? No sir I wouldn't.

Ya see everyone has different expectations of what "tack driver" means. Nothing more nothing less, and certainly nothing to get fuzzed up about on the ole interwebs.

Most of the time I think it's the "Shooter" behind the Rifle that makes it better....those that take their time to find the perfect bullet and powder are those that make a Rifle look/perform so much better.I'm more of a find the Factory Load that works the best in my Savage Rifles and stay with it,plus keeping a Rifle cleaned and maintained helps in making it last and work better!


Another thing that helps is those that share their trials and errors and talk about what They have tried,the amount of twist in different Rifles and what Brand Bullets & different Grains they have used in their Rifles be it Hand Loading or Factory Loaded Rounds!As several mentioned,some Rifles can be finicky and take more time to find the right combination to improve it's Accuracy!
 
I'm pretty anal when it comes to accuracy. Seems its never good enough. I was looking for a light weight budget rifle. If it would shoot an inch at a hundred yards it would fill the need I was looking for. So far the Axis is doing just that. Tack driver? If the tacks are in the right place I guess!!

Agreed, my rifle out-shoots me for sure. Beluebow, I wasn't trying to get nasty, I just didn't know if people around here have a definition. I certainly wasn't being literal, I maybe should have said "shooter." or something along those lines

The suject is always one of interpetation on tack driving. The best equipment doesn't always win a group match. Driving is the key at some point. I worked with my stepson on his new 223 SPS varmint rifle doing load development. Getting speeds and groups turned out to be quite easy for that one.

Obviously the speeds were the same for both of us but at the bench while he was shooting very well for a true beginner with consistent 0.6 to 0.7 I never failed to shave 0.2" off his groups with the same load. His were decent but mine were down wear they were acceptable to me.

They're cheap for what you get. Sure ain't no Barret or AI.
I have no idea why the shoot so well for how cheap they are, but in my experience, they sure do have accurate rifles.

I've had 5 savages over the past 7 years. Sold two of them, traded on. Every one was sub MOA with factory ammo. I didn't much like the feel of the bolt on my 270, but it would should half MOA out to 300 yards (farthest I shot paper with it) any day of the week, with factory ammo! That's a win in my books.

I sold the two because the action didn't feel as nice, and sometimes the bolt would get hung up on the magazine on one of them. Not even near as smooth as a rem 700. But they were definitely shooters.
 
I have a Savage Model 12 BVSS, single shot, with 10-40x scope in .223. I can shoot pinwheels in 22 targets at 100 yards in prone position all day long. Is that a tack driver?
