Dog,

Glad you are around to enjoy the fine sport of coyote calling. Your advise should be heeded by anyone who ventures out on the ice. Thanks for sharing the experience - who knows you may have just saved some readers' life.

I am a second generation predator caller. Grew up into since I've been 5 yrs old.

I also Ice Fish. Good advice there we always pack a chunk or rope with us and an ice pick each. I coyote hunt cause it is fun, and cool to call all animals in. Yote hunting allows me to become a better hunter all around and ince getting serious about it, I have taken way more big animals as well. I also hunt to help out local herds of deer and elk.

I heard every word you said! I lost a great friend, and THE guy who got me into hunting, to an ice fishing accident. Jan 21, in Colorado, a time when you think there would be no better time to ice fish.

To get to your question, I was in Sycamore Il for about 9 yrs and a friend there taught me the ropes. I was hooked the first time out because it is so much like turkey and elk hunting, very interactive. The difference with the other two your sounding like you want to be bread and with coyotes you are wanting to be eat'n...I don't know, something about that just makes it intence! They are just so smart and to beat an animal that is that smart is a huge sence of accomplishment. On top of it all it makes the hunting season just that much longer, something the wife doesn't want. If you think Il is fun to hunt coyotes, try NE.

I began coyote hunting when I was in college in Alamogordo NM. When I moved to NM I was upset to find out that deer season was only three days long. Somes guys at the local gun shop told me about their calling contest and were nice enough to take me along. I have been hooked ever since. I find it to be the most exciting hunting there is.

For me I wanted to give it a try cuz I heard it was a big rush to have coyotes come in and just about run you over looking for a dyin' rabbit. Well 1st time I called I came litererally face to face (3 FT) with a coyote. Scared the crap outta me. Never got a good shot off ( to busy fillin' my shorts) but after that I was hooked.

I just got married in Oct...if thats not enough to go sit in the minus 20 degree weather a few nights a week I dont know what is /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Doghunterill, sometimes when folks get close to death like you did they look at life a little different. Thank God you are still with us and I'm happy for you that you have found this sport. I'm not just a coyote hunter, I'm a predator hunter. I call in bobcats, lions, bears, badgers, fox and coyotes. Some folks don't have all those critters to call in so I guess I'm lucky. Predator hunting has been a big part of my life, it's a special feeling between hunters, a respect I guess. To hard to put into words, but I'm sure the guys that have been doing it a long time know what I mean. Good Luck to you and enjoy one of the best outdoor experences a hunter can have. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Great answers by all. I coyote hunt for many reasons: love to see fox and yotes coming to the call, love to handle that prime winter fur, great time to be out, no people, all by your self, great to look at all the animal tracks in the snow, I ice fish on sunday and call on saturday, the reasons could go on and on. Another reason is the respect that comes with calling and killing coyotes. Most people around here will ruin any hunt just to kill a coyote and if you are recognized as a coyote killer then people respect that. Coyotes are very hard on our wintering deer and helping them out is also a source of pride. Also, Maine coyotes are the biggest and the baddest coyote in America, so calling them in is a major accomplishment.
I have a feeling that I will get some responses for that last comment /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Oh yeah ! well our coyotes are,,,, well never mind. I started at 12 when I would hear all the neighbors cussing the coyotes. I always had to go get the cows in the pasture down by the river at milking time and would often see more than 1 coyote on the venture and figured they needed to be shot. Stole ,,(borrowed) my older brothers 22 auto for one trip and got the first coyote I ever shot at with five shots. I used all 12 or 14 shots in the gun to do that. That was back in 1962. Been hooked ever since.

I hunt (call) coyotes because it is a real challenge and very exciting. I started out calling foxes about 45 BC (before coyotes)-LOL. In the 80's coyotes took over this territory and it was a natural transition for me I enjoy the fur sales too. I just returned from a pretty expensive guided whitetail hunt in SD(shot a BIG 10 pointer) but the biggest thrill of the trip was lip squeaking in a big male coyote. And to the gentleman from Maine, you probable do have the "biggest and baddest" coyotes in the USA. We'll settle for second place!

Glad you made it out are still with us.

I love the quite and outdoors, being stelthy and calling whenever I think one may be about. A good friend asked me to come out to his ranch dring calving season and keep an eye out for the dogs. I did get one but it's so much of a hit and miss thing around his place now. I ahven't been out in months. They'er over hunted by us and wise to what we do.

I do plane on a trip out next week.

Good hunt'n to Ya and God Bless.

The main reason I started is because I just love hunting and being outdoors. Coyote hunting seemed like it would be exciting, and except for some restrictions during firearms deer seasons, you can hunt them year-round here.

Other than just wanting more hunting time, in the past 2-3 years people's pets and farm animals have been getting attacked and several people aren't too thrilled that there's so many yotes around. Also, the yotes have begun making a serious impact on the rabbit population and to some extent the deer population, so hunters of other types of game aren't too happy either. So, most people around here like the idea of someone removing a few yotes, and of course that means it isn't terribly difficult to find places to hunt, espeially if you know a farmer who is having trouble with yotes.

I'm so glad you came out of the Lake SAFE, It was a situation you and your son will remember all your lives. As for why I hunt coyotes (Predators). I started in 1965 when a friend and I put our money together and bought a call (Weems) I think. We got a ride out of town. Two kids in the dark with our bows, arrows and one flashlight. I started giving my impression of what I though a rabbit would sound like if it was getting killed, just to see what would happen. We had two pair of greys come into that first stand. Bows still unstung and excited, we were hooked for life. The excitement is still there after all these years. Lots of good people involved in this sport and I've been lucky enough to share my stands with Good friends, Beginners and some great kids over the years. Being able to share the excitement keeps me calling.

Why do I hunt coyotes?
Because... they are there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
OK..When I was a kid we had lots of rabbits and quail around here. My dad and my brother and I hunted every weekend always filling the freezer with quail for our Christmas dinner. In 1978 we had a blizzard that decimated the quail population, and of course the good ole state of Indiana failed to even notice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Deer and coyotes were just beginning to be seen around here back then so, since the quail were gone, my dad and brother took to deer hunting. I always liked shooting goundhogs and such so I never really got into deer hunting but naturally gravitated to predators, where I could use my varmint rifle. But I just took shots of oppurtunity when a coyote would wander out while I was shelling corn or cleaning fencerows or whatever. I hadn't tried calling. In the early 90's I got into turkey hunting and really enjoyed going one on one with a gobbler. I figured since I could call in a turkey surely I could call in a coyote or a fox. I'd also noticed we hadn't been seeing as many deer and rabbits around since the coyotes really took hold. My hunting buddy bought a caller and we decided to give it a try one late November morning. We each took up in separate treestands overlooking a small bean stubble field and we killed our first called coyote not three minutes after tuning the caller on. Well we were both hooked and have been at it ever since. I enjoy being outdoors on cold winter mornings when it's quiet. It's also great excercise for a guy in his late 40's. I don't use a 4-wheeler so I walk many miles over the season. I love the thrill of seeing a coyote coming sneaking in looking for the prey sound I'm making. I learned to use mouth calls along with the Foxpro I just bought. I think coyote huntng has heightened my awareness of the outdoors and made me a better hunter.

Looks like we have some oldtimers, 1962 and 65 was a long time ago. Did any of you guys belong to the famous clubs of yesteryear, the AVCA or the CVCA? For those who don't know, those were the so called good old days of predator hunting.

No, Back in those days I was just a kid in Southern California trying to learn how to be a predator hunter. Lots of trial & error. We were lucky enough to have a great population of grey fox, coyotes and even a few bobcats around. Calling was really just starting to take off in our area, so we did have lots of successful stands. At first, all I was able to hunt with was a bow & arrow. Mom wouldn't let me have a gun (Times Change). I remember even calling from elevated stands we put in cottonwood trees, so we could draw our bows without being seen. Using straight skunk scent and having coyotes cycle the trees within feet before taking our shots. No presure made it great. It was easy to learn from our mistakes then, lots of action. Those are some good memories. We did managed to take quite a few dogs out of the trees too.....

I hunt them for a number of reasons.I deer hunt already lost one to them this year every year I seem to run into a pack of them where I hunt even when we have wiped the pack out from the year before.I got 3 places that have a pack in it this year.Had a pack in my yard tonite after deer,so I'm up to 4 places.
