Why do coyotes have such a bad rap?

The area that I live and hunt and have hunted for my whole life is getting harder and harder to hunt deer and pheasants and ducks and geese the outfitters tie up thousands of acres for waterfowl hunting and there are so many pheasant hunters around every little pothole and any cover is posted up tight. And deer hunting has gotten so bad people get so jealous if you shoot their deer that left their property. Hunting kinda sucks around here for that stuff right now. The only thing that is left are the coyotes and just about anybody will let you hunt them. So the way I see it is everyone can have their deer and their birds I just want to hunt coyotes. It takes alot more skill to kill one of them than an old duck anyway. Unless they are heckling my buddies livestock I leave them alone when the are denning and I will try not to shoot any until the end of October unless I get an itch that needs to be scratched. I think it would be kinda cool to start a foundation like the rocky mountain elk foundation or pheasants forever but call it coyotes forever and then raise some coyotes and turn them loose on some state land. Hahaha jk. But seriously I would rather hunt coyotes or predators any predator than anything else right now.
 
Sounds like my state.Other then hog hunting coyotes is the only plentiful animal to hunt and it's fun calling them in.
 
sounds a lot like around here too in that so much land is tied up for the deer hunters.... makes it no fun, and here the bow hunters and gun hunters do not get along at all even though there are separate seasons.

Not much bird hunting around here pretty much all put and take.
 
coyotes dont need any help in populating.

i love hunting coyotes, but will never give up my elk, deer, bear, moose, sheep and goat.

This was my little Aussie after a coyote came up to my house and got her. I heard her get ambushed and flew outside with my 45. This picture was taken at the vet clinic. She lived.....but a lot of coyotes since then haven't.

If I remember right, you're a Utah guy as well. If that is correct, you can surely thank our DWR! First it's the bear that's killing everything, so issue tons of bear tags. That didn't work, so it must be the lions...issue more tags ($$$), and allow open hunting half way through the season. Since that didn't change our deer population much, it must be the yotes. Pretty soon it's going to be the squirrels...

My take on it is that the division loves money, and will issue something like 90k deer tags for the revenue they generate, and expect to be able to maintain stable deer populations.
 
Wow CR they tore up your dog bad. That's why they need to be kept under control. But I would still rather have them around than all the out of state hunters that come and buy up land and lease land and post it up. I loose more and more hunting opportunities every year due to [beeep] ducks and pheasants. My son will never get to experience what I got to when I was growing up. I just feel fortunate that I had the opportunity to experience it and have the memories I have.
 
She had a fracture in her neck and multiple punctures and lacerations. It was 37 miles to the vet clinic and my old cummins got us there in 24 minutes. I wrapped her up in her favorite big fuzzy blanket to try to hold off shock and folded it up around her head in a vulgar attempt to stabilize her spine. Just like running on our ambulance crew, most of the time the best thing we can provide for our trauma patients (short of a helicopter) is a massive bolus of diesel fuel. So that's what Maggie got. Rolled coal all the way to the vet who was very sympathetic and gave her I.V. pain meds and antibiotics. They kept her for five days and when she was eating and drinking again they said it was about all they could do. I had to help her stand up to urinate and defecate because it was a couple of weeks before she could stand on her own. It was a couple of months before she was running on her own. She has some lingering effects but given what I thought the end result would be that night, I couldn't be happier for her.
Now, I used to be reasonably considerate of how I hunted and killed coyotes. I tried to be ethical and always go for the boilermaker shot that would drop them instantly with as little pain as possible. Those days are behind me and I no longer feel any consideration for the pain a coyote endures. I know that will not sit well with some of you but that's how it is. If my 22-250 or 25-06 will reach them, I do my level best to kill them. I have even got one out in the middle of a huge field of mine and ran him in a circle on my quad till he was gassed. I ran over him then beat him to death with a shovel. Thats not something I ever would have done before but its personal now. No mercy given and none shown.
 
Hunt how you want I couldn't do that but they didn't chew up my dogs either. That would probably change if they did. I won't judge like I said if they are killing live stock or pets then they need to be removed.
 
CR good story and happy about your dog, but sure wouldn't want to be a yote around your place, sounds like there in for deep sh#t any way you look at it.....
 
Devildogg, I can appreciate where you are coming from. Maggie has been a great dog and a great friend since the day I brought her home seven years ago. She has spent countless hours with me checking cattle or mending/building fences. She loves to ride in the tractors with me and especially likes the combine because it has an air vent right down on the floor. She'll lay right in front of that a/c vent and spend the whole harvest with me.
We have always had a problem with coyotes getting calves. Its a cost of doing business but one I have always tried to mitigate. When that light-coated [beeep] tried to drag my dog off and eat her it became pretty darn personal. I don't hunt deer. I don't hunt pheasants. Or turkeys. Or quail. Or anything else. I don't even fish. I hunt coyotes. I reload ammo thinking about how best to kill coyotes. I buy equipment thinking about killing more coyotes. If I could have killed that one that night I would have done a European mount of her skull and stuck it on a post in my yard.
 
I would treat them the same as well.

Every house or farm that I ask about coyote hunting on their place in western Ks... all said the same thing... Kill them Suckers. They all had the same story about how the coyotes would come into their yard at night and kill their pets... and their livestock.

Name me one thing they are good for other than targets...
 
i have seen peoples dogs pack up and kill deer.coyotes just do what they do to survive and defend their territory.not sticking up for them but i have seen peoples pets do bad things to.it is too bad about your dog i really enjoy mine they make great companions [better than people sometimes]

Keeping the cat population in check.

They do a pretty good job on field mice.

Being targets does rank as number 1 though.
 
They bring me great joy and purpose and direction in life. I love predator hunting and have been doing it with my dad who had me tagging along with for over 30 years. Some of my first memories of hunting are predator hunting.
 
The drought last year made them especially invasive whether it was for water or an easy meal. It forced them into territory they would never broach under normal circumstances. I am lucky to have been right there for my dog. Lots of neighbors lost bigger dogs than mine to coyotes last year. To give you an idea of how bad they were, I contacted an acquaintance of mine who was at that time the game warden for my area (he recently retired, hence the past tense). His exact words were "I don't care how you kill them. I don't care if you use a slingshot or a rocket launcher or anything in between. Just get out there and kill as many as you can!"
I have a case of 12 gauge 3" mag 00 buckshot I am itching to try out on one. Preferably one of those that comes in hard and fast to the calls so he can have a face full of it.

Ask most cowmen/ranchers what they think of coyotes. Ever seen a mauled calf so bad, half alive that might as well be dead? How about ears or tails chewed off newborns or a 1-2 month old calves? Ever seen a few coyotes harass a calving heifer until she is so nervous and spent her calf is still born? I have to all the above. I dont hate coyotes, I just like watching 'em tip over.
