this time of the year as they do in the fall and winter and spring?? I can hear the train go down the tracks from where I live and usally you can hear the yotes howling when it does but for the past couple of weeks I have not heard them howling no where. Is there a reason for this??

I don't believe anyone knows 100%, exactly why they howl & when they howl. As well as why don't they howl. Not to mention what each howl/yip/bark "really" means. A big discussion of opinions, for sure.

Perhaps they moved away, or were just passing through{tresspassers}. Or were just gathering the pack. As far as train whistles, sirens & some other loud noises, ie; calls. They sometimes seem to respond & sometimes not.

Personally, I've stalked in on quite a few in daytime winter snow. Using, a train's whistle{in the background}. To help mute my walking on loud snow. Never seen one howl or bark from those whistles, during those hunting jaunts....go figure /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif.

The coyotes that Live around my area aint been howling much either. I just assumed it meant that they aready found who they was looking for and are to busy raising pups to need to communicate with another coyote, or even want another one around that may want to eat thier pups. I'm proably wrong but it seemed like a logical thought and reason to me.

kirby, I like the way you said it, nobody knows for sure. No human can speak the language of the coyote, though some try to make you think they can. I do believe certain sounds can trigger a responce, but nobody knows for sure why.

t/c223encore, that's as good a thought as any other. Again, who knows for sure....you could be right.

The strange thing is a few days ago me and dad was in the hills shooting our 223's and after 10 or so shots I heard coyotes startin to howl, I thought it was strange for them to be makin noise after some gun shots in the area. I know the area well and I know about where they were, so when the time comes I'll get after them.
