Why I am BOYCOTTING the US Postal Service

If you want to talk about horror stories involving shipping packages: the dock I was working on sent out (in addition to a lot of other items) 2 boxes with a value of $60,000.00 (main frame computer componeints); they came back looking like they had been run over by one of that companies trucks; then the trucking companies representative tried to claim that those boxes left our dock looking like that (we had started taking pictures of each pallet before it left because of too much of that type of nonsence).

I don't doubt at all that that's what your postmaster said. Each postmaster has his/her own way of running things in their office. It's a messed up system. The distribution plant I work in gets all parcels (except registered and express mail) in big metal containers all mixed together, fragile, insured, delivery confirmation, everything. The only place they are treated different is once they get to the office they are going to. Then they are just separated and the barcodes are scanned. We get some parcels stamped "insured" and they are ignored and treated like all the rest unless they have the insured barcode "official" sticker. I didn't mean to imply that you were making it up, like I said, each postmaster runs their own office however they want.

Sorry about your loss Jerry. Its a shame we have to insure every single thing we own, send, drive, etc.

My only advice is watch what you say to them "postal workers". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

Thanks for all of the advice guys....I actually feel a little better now! LOL
Bottom line is this: "Big guy" always takes advantage of "Little Guy" if he thinks he can get away with it....especially if "Big Guy" is backed by the Governemnt.
This will go on forever until "Little Guy" bans together with his buddies and says..."I've had enough!"
Then things start to change......slowly.
Kinda like the fact that I've had over 400 people read this thread so far. I'm sure a few of them will think twice before shiping with the Postal Service.
That makes me feel pretty good......they lost some money.

Well I work for UPS as well, and I can honestly say that stealing a pkg is not worth my job, I make too good of a living to jeapordize losing it i have a family. We also insure the first 100.00 for free plus you get a tracking # so that you can follow your pkg's progress. I know that we get bashed a bunch, but I get along with all of my customers. I have been offered hunting opportunties to some of the best ranches in northern NM, and that is from earning their trust not by spending hundreds or thousands of dollars. There are pieces of crap that work in every job. I am sorry for your loss, and I have seen pkgs that come down the rollers that look like they have been ran over twice, but I check the pkg, rebox it and check the invoice and if there is anything missing I tell the customer and give them the choice of refusing it because it was damaged or they can keep it and contact their shipper about the lost contents. I have delivered rifles, handguns, scopes and tons of other stuff and when I deliver it I usually get to talk to the owner of the items, thus developing a friendship with them. I have been able to look through scopes that I would have otherwise been unable to look at, spotting scopes and binoculars as well. These guys have let me look through Leupold, Zeiss, Meopta, Ior Valdada's and so on. Alot of the guys that I deliver too also offer me discounts at their stores as well. There for giving back to the community. Sorry I have gone a little long winded but either you like your UPS guy or you don't, or so it would seem. I enjoy my job and the people involved.

I am glad you will not be shipping with USPS. It is obvious that you have little experience in the real world. You need a handler in life. The major problem in shipping, whether its UPS, FED-ex or USPS when it comes to damaged goods is how its packaged. So listen up dim-wit, you can not put 10 lbs in a container that will only secure 1 lb, and wrap it with bags you got from the grocery store. So rant on some where else, as this is about Predator's not your liberal crying.

Make some pretty bold statements about the USPS.
#1 we are not subdivided buy your tax dollars.
#2 If you can manage a e-mail to another country you may ask them the cost of mail/1oz. Ours is .39 anywhere in this country, delivered to you 6 days a week. And lets not forget that person that delivers your mail also is one of you best security people around. They know your IE: family patterns, and when something is not right at that house, it is more likely a USPS carrier that called it in.
#3 if you do e-bay and the buyer claims they did not receive it, paid by pay Pay_Pal. You are screwed, however the USPS will go after this under mail fraud.
So get a life in hunting, and quite whining. And yes I work proudly for the USPS.

I work for the United States Postal Service. I am a city letter carrier [mailman]. I would just like to say YEAHAW!!! One less Ebayer to deal with. More time for me to get the junk mail delivered so I can go home with only 10 hours of work today.

All kidding aside, I feel for your loss. However, hopefully I can say a few things here that may help. The carrier that you talked to had the deer in the headlights look because we are not allowed to tell you to [beeep] off you fat red bastard to your face. We are just the messengers, if your carrier did not help you then go to the supervision of your local office. If he/she is no help then go to the station manager. If he/she = no help...go to the postmaster. If no help then go over their head and go to the district then region then postmaster general. Phone calls = no help. emails = no help. In person gets results.
I am offended that you automatically think that this was/is a theft issue. Dude, I don't have time and it is not worth losing a job for 30$ worth of whatever it is. A guy in our office was suspect of theft, the PI's came in and baited a parcel, he opened it and a sensor went off and he was unemployed 30 minutes later. I am not saying that it doesn't happen because it does, in every job everywhere. That is just the nature of the world that we live in now. I doubt anyone here would have taken your stuff because we don't get enough time off to go trapping.
If it was not insured then you apparently have no concern for its value. If you ask for [I believe,I am no clerk] $50 insurance the clerk puts on a red ink stamp. If you want the package tracked as it travels you pay extra and get the barcode and you can state a dollar value. If you did none of this then you are most likely out of chances for a financial reimbursement.
My sugestion is talking to a real person preferably of management. Ask them to contact the offices or plants that the parcel passed through and see if they have any snare type stuff there. We don't just throw it away. Hopefully you can get somewhere doing this as right now the bosses are so damned concerned about getting every piece of mail delivered even if it means loosing money. It is a wonder they have a budget to pay our paychecks.

Is there any reason that the recipient of the package might be to blame? Was the tape cut open, torn, crushed? Did they get their stuff and reship the box? Or could this just be a parcel hungry machine that got the box? I am sorry for the loss. On my route I have 450 individual stops to make every day,I get @1200 letters,650 magazines,300 misc pieces, usually a full covering of junkmail, and @15 parcels and @20 small chunks[like checkbooks] every single day. My route is "the small route" in the office. My co-carriers get up to @1000 stops a day. Do the math. That is a S-load of stuff to go through on a daily bassis. Times that by 300million americans and your parcel [not to belittle it] becomes a non issue just due to logistics. So NO do not insure the stuff you send from theft, although it is one of the casualties of deliveries, but insure it from theft/dammage/loss/misdelivery/theft from your "neighbors" as some parcels are just left on the front porch [by all courier companies]and just a simple peace of mind and ease of recovery if necessary.
I hope this will help [that is what you asked for]. I know it made sense in my head but might not have made it to the keyboard. If I could help further please PM me. Thanks.

P.S. The U.S.P.S. is a federal position and such, however it is under a private contract and not a government entity or subsidy. In other words I get off all the good holidays but none of your taxes pay my/our way. Right now we are waiting and watching to see what the new contract will be as we are currently working without a contract [contract ended Dec. 2006] What you should be woried about is what management is trying to do now. They want to hire out work to independant contractors to deliver your mail. That means rural routes and city carriers still work but any new additions wherever they may be will be carried by someone not held accountable for doing the work. Now that scares me and if that happens, well, I will not even ship through our service because there is no telling what will happen on the other end of the delivery. thank you and good night.
