Why not a 5.7X28 standard upper?

How impossible is it to build a standard bottom mag fed upper for this round?...It truly is one of the only "niche" rounds i would be interested in....Somewhat above a 22 mag,,and less kaboom than a .223...would be a fox shooting machine.

I would assume feeding from a bottom mag would have the same feeding issues seen when you try feeding a 22-250 in an AR10. If the round is TOO short, it's prone to getting out of alignment before it starts to enter the chamber.

That's just an assumption though.

A work-around-fix would be to just modify a mag or build a new mag that lets the bullets ride in the very front of the magazine, perhaps with a false back, a modified follower and repositioned feed lips.

coyotex,
You know I've been saying that ever since a friend of mine gave me a live 5.7 x 28 cartridge and it is setting in front of me right now on my computer desk. I keep picking it up and saying the same thing as you....this would be a great fox round. A little more than a 22 mag. but not blow them up like a 223 rem.
Only difference is, I would want it in a bolt gun since we can't use semi auto rifles in Pennsylvania for hunting. (bummer).

And as far as the other guy saying short rounds have a feeding problem in AR platform type rifles...how do you explain the S&W M&P 15-22 that shoots 22 long rifles. Of which I have one.
They just necked down the magazine to the 22 cartridge.

FYI here is one that uses FN 90 mags it is top feed, but the part I think is nice is the bottom ejection through the empty mag well. I assume the OP knows about this since he is asking specifically for the standard mag feed.
some newcomers may not know so I thought I would post this since it is on my short list.

AR 57 Upper

There are possibly cheaper options out there if you look around.

I keep thinking I might eventually get the shorter barrel version of that and build a pistol. I bet that would be fun!

A friend of mine has that upper and I have had the chance to put a lot of rounds through it. The only problem with that design is that can't put a scope on it. The way the magazines load, you have to insert the muzzle end under that lip and then drop the other end in place. If you have a scope on there, you can't get the magazine on. It's not a problem if you are using some sort of a red dot or Eotech - but you won't have room to put a magnifier behind it. The one CMMG is working on would eliminate that problem.

Good find Cbass! I didn't know that existed, I think I want one for some unknown reason. One question, I saw the pic of the rifle, and the description of being blowback operated. So why the gas block, for a front sight base? I assume if you were going strictly optics that you could eliminate it and use a midlength ff tube?

Good point never thought of the scope issue, I would probably just go with a red dot anyhow, but I could see the issue for someone else. The conventional mag feed would definitely be better for a scope mount then.

Well as soon as the parts or complete upper/mag are ready to come my way,,i will match a plum crazy lower to it,,,And the crows and groundhogs better stay away if i get it built by july.
