Why would you want to go Africa???

Here's more pics from our hunt with Lochi and Gerhard. This is an African wildcat. It is a wildcat and not a feral cat. And no it's not someone's pet. It is a very dangerous predator and one should not underestimate it's vicious and violent nature. Thanks to my superior firepower and awesome skill with a "borried rifle", We were never in any real danger. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You notice the hat lights on the brims of our hats. They are awesome little lights that clip on the visor of your ball cap. They ahve a switch that allows you to use 1,3,or5 lights at a time. Very handy. with just one buld activated, I would be able to "pickup eyes" at close to 100 yds.It wouldn't illuminate the animal, but certainly would light the eyes.
They are handy to have around the truck or camp. This was our field test trip for these units and we came away impressed.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif More great photos! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Thanks for sharing those. Where are those lights available from?

The only place I know these lghts are available is from me.
There are 5 led's in the light. It will clip onto the brim of your hat, very lightweight. switch allows choice of one, three or five lights on at a time. Takes two of the flat, coin style lithium batteries. CR 2032 Comes complete with batteries. shipped to U.S. or Canada. $15 U.S. discounts available for multiples.

Spare batteries are $5 for six. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We wondered what happened to Tabby. Haven't seen him in a while.
Jim, what is the average weight of the jackal?
Did you bring them in with your foxpro? What sounds?
Did you try any vocalizations on the jackal?

Rich, that is the beast known locally as Ntabbyapopo. [ Deadacat Africanus}/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Tabby's African cousin.

The Black back Jackal is a little smaller than a Canadian Coyote and similar in size to AZ coyotes.

I used my FX3. The first stand I started with a Jackrabbit distress. My PH asked where I got the sound from, I explained that FOXPRO has a very elaborate and extremely extensive sound collection that is the envy of the industry. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
He said "No Dummy! I mean where did you get the recording of the Spring Hare???" I tried to explain that it was not an African Spring hare, but indeed a North American wild hare. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Of course he was as skeptical of that as he was of my ability to call predators during the day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gifFirst stand 2-3minute runs of the jack in distress brought in 2 jackals and a caracal. The PH looked like Wiley Coyote with his eyeballs stuck way out. I could have knocked his eyes off with a stick. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I also had some Jackal vocals. They responded very well to them. I used them ,much as I would coyote vocals in Canada. Jackals are more vocal than coyotes.Group or locator brought lots of response. Then a male challenge would evoke a response, then as we went back and forth sometimes I would introduce a coyote pup distress to encourage a "hanger back" It would usually motivate him to come on in.
Of course there was more to it than simply play this sound for x..min, then this sound for y ...min,
I found it very similar to calling coyotes, in that you find them and set up an intimate relationship with them, by using coyote/jackal vocalisations, dine with them vicariously through the prey sounds , and then shoot at them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I also used hand calls that I'd bought from some of the custom makers on the board. I even left several in Africa for the locals. Seems their options for obtaining hand calls are rather limited. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Redfrog, thanks for making this trip for me. All my life I have wanted to go, but you sir, well, with your pictures, I now know I can go down to the local humane society and take a "safari". I can get some of those "wild" cats and some of the "jackals". Here, I believe that they are called "kitty" cats and "corgis".

Thanks for putting it all into perspective.

We used to raise exotic cats 7 years ago. We owned 6 African Wildcats. They are mean suckers. They are about knee high and we used to cross breed them to domestic cats to create Chausie cats. They have a heck of a set of teeth too.

Jackals aren't as big as I thought they'd be, but sure a cute suckers.

Tony

All of the pics you guys have posted from Africa are pretty cool there Frog, I really would love to call and take a jackel someday, those little guys have the neatest fur!

Later,

Scott

Bob Mc. There are quite a few caracal in the area we called in the south. I called in two on different occassions during the day. We should get a couple next time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

So what happened to your cat house operation Tony /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Moved to Iowa. They frown on 'cat houses' here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif We actually sold alot of kittens. One we kept and was knee high and 35 lbs. He was colored like a cougar.

Oh, as far as african predators? Serval would be my choice. That would make the trip all worth it. I always wanted to buy one.

Tony

Tony I got an email from Gerhard today saying he shot a serval the other night. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I'm leaving for RSA one week from Sunday for plains game and these recent posts have done much to heighten the anticipation. Our PH said he love to do some night calling for jackals so hopefully I will be able to report as to the effectiveness of .300 WSM 180gr partitions on them.

Great pids and stories.

Thanks for the pics of the wild cat. I'll feel much better about putting fluffy in the dirt the next she walks through my yard. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
