Wild Boar hunting with a knife?

Here in Indiana we have some hogs and they seem to want to hunt these hogs with either a rope and knife or dogs and a knife. A small city cop here and his brother hunt them this way and I have heard the stories around here that a lot of the younger guys in shape and can run will hunt them here like that. Is this the norm in some areas? They hunt them in the river bottoms. It really does sound fun...something different, something new. Sounds kinda silly really, I would rather shoot it. Hate to see a 300 pounder with just a knife and a rope to hook the feet.

I've hunted them with dog and knife. It's a blast but for me nothing beats a bang flop!
The ol' rifle is just an extension of my anatomy.

I've hunted them with dogs its an awesome rush. I wouldn't go after them with just a rope and a knive though.

I was hoping you would chime in because I was thinking if anyone has tried this I bet Glen has. I was reading one of your stories on hogs and you seem very successful in that area as well. To me it sounds exciting and scary at the same time. I was invited to this hunting event and I think I will be packing a Desert Eagle also. Anyway they were talking about night hunting and I keep thinking about that big hog and a knife and it just sounds like a knife is so little intimidation to a hog. I'm going to get together and see when they want to go hunting and kind of watch from the side lines for a bit of time and see how it plays out.

Hogs really aren't intimidated much by guns either, unti lthey go BANG. Been there done that dog huntin with rope routine, except we didn't use the knife, we tied the critter up, drug it out of the woods, and loaded it up in the dog box.

Skip the images of bear hugging a pig with blade a slashin at the beast, in Tarzan fashion... It don't go down that way!!

Bang Flop version is much safer and more sensible.

If your hunting with good dogs the only real danger is to the dogs. Throw a gun in the mix with dogs and a couple of guys watching and it can get dangerous quick. It is a rush and you'd better be in good shape to keep up with the hounds.
I've never owned hog dogs, but I enjoyed years ago running beagles and coon hounds. So I love the race. I'd still rather hunt them down myself and shoot them. We get up close and personal with a lot of them, no dogs in the way to get shot and no vet bills.

It will be a first time experience to say the least and it does sound rather silly when common sense kicks in. I just want to hang out with the boys on this one and see how they do it...more of a learning experience not the way I would intend to hunt hogs. One hunt is enough to say that you done it right...lol. I hunt them with a rifle myself but was invited and thought I would check it out...Glen you stack up hogs like the guys out west stack up coyotes.

Our population isn't that big anyway so maybe we wont see any and it's kind of hit and miss in the good areas around the river bottoms.
