Wild hogs...varmints?

A recent post got me to wondering how many of you guys consider wild (feral) hogs as varmint and why? I've always thought of any animal that was reasonably edible (a big gray area) as a game animal. That said I also see how a non-native pain in the arse animal might be lumped in as a varmint. Just wondering what you guys think as I sit and waist time on a beautiful Spring day...

Many use the word 'undesireable' as the definition of a varmint. The main definition is Predator.

Predatory - no
Undesireable - well yes and no.
Yes I will eat all you point me at so how is that undesireable...

But the destruction that they do to crops and such makes them undesirable to ranchers. Tear deer feeders up too.
One day if ever their numbers are down they may be adopted in the game animal realm so states can make money off of them.

The state of Alabama considers them "non-game" animals, which means there is no closed season on them, and no bag limit. Otherwise, normal hunting rules apply (no shooting from roads, no night hunting, etc..). They are sure enough destructive and no one I know wants them on their land - sounds like "vermin" to me - they just happen to be edible.

We had a few of the wild hogs escaped off of wild game hunting preserves here in Pa. and our game commission has given the green light to any hunter running across any of them. I dont know personally the kind of damage they can cause just what i have heard. But I wouldn't mind getting one just for the meat. As to varmints? I eat my share every year of snake, groundhog, coon, possum,I even tried a couple chipmunks at camp this past fall just to say that I did. They werent to bad but alot of work for all the bigger they are. Least I wouldnt starve if I had to live of the land in a survival situation.

They are considered varmints here in michigan what with the recent DNR announcement of "free fire" zones. DNR just plain wants them dead. No wild hogs allowed in michigan.

As a sportsman I'm pretty interested in watching this scenario for the hunting and eating purposes. Oh yeah, bring 'em on.

chipmunks????????

would that kinda be like puting one on a stick and deepfrying one??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
